Dharma Productions Dismisses Homebound Plagiarism Allegations as “Baseless and Unfounded”

Dharma Productions is facing serious allegations of plagiarism regarding its film Homebound, which has recently been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. Author and journalist Puja Changoiwala claims that the film closely mirrors her 2021 novel of the same name. In response, Dharma Productions has categorically denied the accusations, labeling them as “baseless and unfounded,” while asserting that the film is an officially licensed adaptation.
Legal Claims and Responses
Puja Changoiwala’s legal notice, sent in October, alleges that significant elements of the film’s second half—including scenes, dialogue, and narrative structure—are strikingly similar to her book. She contends that Homebound not only shares a title with her novel but also incorporates substantial creative elements from it. Changoiwala is seeking legal remedies, which may include an injunction against the film’s release and financial damages.
In a statement shared with Mid-Day, Dharma Productions firmly rejected the claims, stating, “The allegations of copyright infringement are baseless and unfounded.” The production house emphasized that Homebound is an officially licensed adaptation inspired by a New York Times article by Basharat Peer, with all necessary rights acquired and proper credit given. They also mentioned that they have received a legal notice and have responded through their legal counsel.
Concerns Over Legal Proceedings
Dharma Productions has expressed awareness of potential pre-suit mediation before the Bombay High Court, as reported in the media. However, they clarified that no formal communication regarding this matter has been received. The production company takes these allegations seriously and is considering legal action to safeguard the integrity of their film. The ongoing copyright dispute adds a complex layer to the public discourse surrounding Homebound, which continues to garner attention for its award prospects.
Film Background and Context
Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound features a cast that includes Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The film is set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 migrant exodus, a poignant theme that resonates with many viewers. As the film gains traction in the awards circuit, the plagiarism allegations have introduced a new dimension to its narrative, potentially impacting its reception and future prospects. The situation remains fluid, and both parties are preparing for the next steps in this legal battle.
