India to Lead Kimberley Process as Chair in 2026
The Kimberley Process (KP) Plenary has made a significant decision, appointing India to take over as chairperson from 1 January 2026. This initiative, which includes government representatives, the diamond industry, and civil society, aims to combat the trade of “conflict diamonds,” which are mined under conditions that finance violence and undermine legitimate governments, in line with United Nations Security Council policies.
India will transition to its role as KP Vice Chair starting 25 December 2025, ahead of its formal chairpersonship in the new year. This marks the third occasion that India has been granted the chair of the Kimberley Process, underscoring its commitment to this vital international initiative.
Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, expressed pride in India’s selection, highlighting that it signifies global confidence in the Modi government’s dedication to fostering integrity and transparency in international trade.
Significance of the Kimberley Process
Established on 1 January 2003 in response to a UN resolution, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) has become a cornerstone in the fight against conflict diamonds. Currently, 60 participants, including the European Union, work together under this framework, accounting for over 99 percent of the global rough diamond trade. It is recognized as the most comprehensive international approach to governing this sector.
India’s Strategic Position
As a prominent player in global diamond manufacturing and trade, India’s leadership comes at a crucial time marked by shifting geopolitical dynamics and an increased focus on sustainable sourcing practices. During its chairmanship, India aims to enhance governance and compliance, promote digital certification and traceability, and foster transparency through data-driven monitoring to bolster consumer trust in conflict-free diamonds.
India, serving both as Vice Chair in 2025 and Chair in 2026, will collaborate with all KP participants and observers to strengthen confidence in the Kimberley Process. The focus will be on ensuring compliance with established rules and enhancing the organization’s credibility, aligning with its core goals while adapting to evolving global expectations. Furthermore, India’s leadership is anticipated to make the Kimberley Process a more inclusive and effective multilateral framework.
