Indian Navy Welcomes New ASW Craft ‘Anjadip’ to Its Fleet
The Indian Navy has taken a significant step forward with the delivery of ‘Anjadip,’ the latest addition to its fleet of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC). This vessel, created by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, was officially handed over on December 22, 2025, in Chennai. As the third of eight ships in this class, ‘Anjadip’ enhances India’s naval operations in crucial anti-submarine warfare.
Innovative Design and Construction
Constructed under the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ‘Anjadip’ showcases a successful collaboration between GRSE and L&T Shipyard based in Kattupalli. This public-private partnership underscores India’s advancements in domestic defense manufacturing. The ASW SWC vessels measure approximately 77 meters in length, making them the largest Indian Naval Warships that utilize waterjet propulsion.
Advanced Capabilities
‘Anjadip’ is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine rockets, and advanced shallow-water sonar systems. These features enable the ship to effectively detect and engage underwater threats, thus bolstering the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine capabilities, as well as enhancing coastal surveillance and mine-laying operations.
A Tribute to Naval Heritage
This modern ship pays homage to its predecessor, the INS Anjadip, a Petya class Corvette that was decommissioned in 2003. Named after Anjadip Island off the coast of Karwar in Karnataka, the vessel reflects India’s dedication to protecting its vast maritime interests. The legacy and significance of the name resonate deeply with the Indian Navy’s ongoing mission.
Commitment to Self-Reliance
The delivery of ‘Anjadip’ marks another milestone in the Indian Navy’s pursuit of indigenous shipbuilding, aligning with the government’s vision of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India. With over 80% of the ship’s components sourced locally, this project highlights the growing domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem and reflects a strategic effort to reduce reliance on foreign imports.
