India Optel Partners with Safran for Advanced Defence Manufacturing
In a significant development under the Make-in-India initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India Optel Limited (IOL), a Mini Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has entered into a collaboration agreement with Safran Electronics & Defense. This partnership aims to facilitate the local manufacturing of two high-precision systems that have been proven in combat scenarios: the SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System and the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight.
These sophisticated systems will enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Army, being integral to artillery guns, air defense systems, missiles, and radar technology. The collaboration agreement was finalized on December 22, 2025, in New Delhi. The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including the Chairman and Managing Director of IOL, Tushar Tripathi, and Alexandre Ziegler, the Head of the Defence Global Business Unit for Safran Electronics & Defense. The event was graced by the presence of the Secretary of Defence Production, Sanjeev Kumar.
Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing
This latest agreement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2024, reinforcing the shared commitment of both IOL and Safran to produce and sustain advanced defence technologies in India. IOL will take charge of manufacturing, final assembly, testing, quality control, and providing full life-cycle support for the systems. This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure that the produced systems meet the evolving operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
By leveraging IOL’s manufacturing capabilities along with Safran’s expertise in high-end inertial navigation and fire-control technologies, this collaboration is expected to bolster India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. The partnership not only promotes local production but also aims to enhance the effectiveness and readiness of India’s land forces, ensuring that they are equipped with top-rated technologies.
