Government Highlights Regional Media Diversity in Jammu & Kashmir
The Government of India has published detailed information about the various newspapers and magazines empaneled by the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) in Jammu & Kashmir. This data, including advertisement spending over the last five years, is readily accessible on the CBC’s official website. This transparency aims to improve public awareness and access to regional media channels.
Dr. L. Murugan, the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, presented this information in the Rajya Sabha after a query from Shri Gulam Ali. The report underscores the significant role of media in serving the diverse populations of Jammu & Kashmir through various publications.
Diverse Media Programming by Doordarshan
The Doordarshan network plays an essential role in broadcasting programs that cater to the region’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Offering content in multiple regional languages and dialects, Doordarshan operates seven national channels and twenty-eight regional or state channels. This extensive outreach allows it to connect with various communities spread across the Union Territory.
In Jammu & Kashmir, viewers can enjoy these programs through channels like DD Kashir and Prasar Bharati Field Generating Station in Jammu. Furthermore, dedicated channels also emphasize multiple languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Punjabi, and Assamese. Notably, programs are also available in regional dialects specific to tribal and local communities.
Besides these languages, Doordarshan broadcasts content in less widely spoken languages such as Sanskrit, Sindhi, Nepali, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali across appropriate regional channels, ensuring a more inclusive media environment. The programming duration varies according to approved schedules, augmenting the regional media landscape with carefully curated content.
Akashvani’s Comprehensive Language Broadcasts
Similarly, Akashvani adheres to its Language and Dialect Policy by transmitting news and various programs in all twenty-two languages outlined in the Eighth Schedule. This includes broadcasts in local tribal languages used in areas under the Sixth Schedule, produced from stations situated in those respective regions.
Through daily broadcasts following designated schedules, both Doordarshan and Akashvani significantly contribute to enhancing regional culture, education, and information dissemination.
