New ₹887 Crore Marina Set to Transform Mumbai’s Waterfront
The Union Government has greenlit an ambitious project to establish a world-class marina in Mumbai Harbour, with an investment of ₹887 crore. This initiative, known as the ‘Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina,’ aims to significantly boost coastal shipping, maritime tourism, and urban waterfront development in India’s financial capital.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved this project, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating global-standard tourism destinations and bolstering the country’s maritime economy.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the project’s importance by stating, “The approval of the ‘Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina’ is a crucial step toward enhancing coastal shipping and maritime tourism. This project is set to create top-tier infrastructure, open the waterfront for public engagement, attract private investment, and create numerous job opportunities. It will position Mumbai as a key global maritime tourism hub while supporting India’s broader aspirations for a thriving blue economy.”
Investment and Infrastructure Plans
The project will utilize a hybrid development model, with the Mumbai Port Authority committing around ₹470 crore for core marina infrastructure through an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) approach. Meanwhile, a private operator is expected to contribute roughly ₹417 crore to develop onshore facilities. This phase has already attracted attention, with tenders issued and bidding set to conclude by December 29, 2025.
World-Class Facilities for Tourists and Enthusiasts
Spread across nearly 12 hectares of water, the marina is designed to accommodate 424 yachts, each up to 30 meters long. The marine infrastructure will feature an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons, and gangways to ensure safe and efficient yacht operations.
The onshore facilities, developed by the private operator, will include a marina terminal, a Namo Bharat International Sailing School, a maritime tourism center, hotel and clubhouse amenities, a skill development center, as well as yacht stacking and repair services.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
In addition to enhancing public access to the waterfront, the project is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs in areas such as marina operations, cruise services, and hospitality. This infrastructure endeavor is also seen as a way to entice private sector investment into coastal projects, further solidifying Mumbai’s status as a significant hub for maritime tourism and cruise activity.
This initiative echoes several national frameworks, including the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030, the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047, and the Sagarmala Programme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving maritime infrastructure and tourism in India.
