India’s Communication Costs Among the Lowest Worldwide
In a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, highlighted that India boasts some of the lowest communication costs globally. This achievement is largely attributed to the effective policies and regulatory frameworks established by the government and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The minister’s remarks were in response to questions regarding mobile service pricing, wherein he cited a report from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the year 2024. This report contrasts mobile service costs, which encompass voice, SMS, and data, across India and neighboring nations. The findings reveal that the average cost for a package in India, which includes 140 minutes of calls, 70 SMS, and 2GB of data, stands at just USD 1.86, making it significantly lower than in various other countries.
Regulatory Framework by TRAI
According to the TRAI Act of 1997, TRAI operates as an independent authority regulating telecommunication services across the nation. Within the current tariff framework, most telecommunication services are governed by a principle of forbearance. However, certain services, such as National Roaming, Rural Fixed Line Services, mobile number portability charges, leased circuits, and USSD services, do have regulated rates.
Telecom providers in India enjoy the latitude to create and customize their tariffs based on market conditions and competitive factors. These service providers determine their pricing strategies for various services, including calls, SMS, and data offerings, offering a range of combinations depending on recharge values and service area requirements. This flexibility allows them to respond effectively to factors such as operating costs and competition levels.
Comparative Analysis of Communication Costs
The comparative analysis of mobile service pricing across different nations showcases India’s exceptional position. For instance, in neighboring countries, the costs are as follows: China at USD 8.56, Afghanistan at USD 6.01, Bhutan at USD 4.56, Bangladesh at USD 2.40, Nepal at USD 2.72, and even Pakistan at USD 1.43. In stark contrast, countries like the USA report an average cost of USD 48.95, Australia at USD 23.07, and the UK at USD 12.62.
This pricing structure not only reflects India’s competitive advantage in telecommunications but also highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable communication services for its citizens.
