Government Unveils New Initiatives to Boost Indian Tourism
The Indian government is intensifying its efforts to promote and develop tourism across the country, highlighting several key initiatives during a recent statement by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The Ministry of Tourism is collaborating closely with State Governments and Union Territory Administrations to enhance tourism infrastructure and increase the appeal of diverse destinations in India.
Major Initiatives for Tourism Development
One of the pivotal programs reshaping the tourism landscape is the revamped Swadesh Darshan Scheme, now known as Swadesh Darshan 2.0. This initiative aims to develop sustainable tourism destinations throughout the nation, with 53 projects receiving approval amounting to ₹2,208.27 Crore. In addition, the Challenge Based Destination Development program has sanctioned 36 projects totaling ₹648.11 Crore. These funds are directed towards the implementation of various tourism infrastructure projects managed by the respective State or UT agencies.
To promote India as a top tourist destination globally, the Ministry of Tourism has launched the Incredible India Content Hub on the revamped Incredible India digital portal (www.incredibleindia.gov.in). This platform serves as a comprehensive repository of high-quality promotional materials such as images, films, and brochures, designed to assist travel media, tour operators, and travel agents in their marketing efforts.
Training and Capacity Building
In an effort to enhance the skills of the workforce in the hospitality sector, the Ministry has initiated the Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP) scheme, which provides education and certification to tourism service providers. Furthermore, the Incredible India Tourist Facilitator (IITF) Certification Programme offers an online learning initiative, while the national responsible tourism initiative known as Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi aims to elevate the overall tourist experience. The Ministry is also simplifying travel for international tourists through the implementation of an e-visa facility, available for citizens of 171 countries at 31 designated international airports and six major seaports. The entire processing of e-visa applications occurs online, making it more accessible.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, efforts are underway to improve air connectivity to significant and less-known tourist destinations. This includes the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-Udan), which aims to provide viability gap funding for 53 identified tourism routes.
Encouraging Private Investment in Tourism
To further stimulate private investment in the sector, guidelines have been set for classifying new infrastructure projects, including three-star or higher hotels outside major cities, cable cars, and large exhibition centres as priority areas for development. These initiatives reflect a strategic commitment by the Indian government to foster a vibrant tourism sector, enhancing both domestic and international visitor experiences.
