IPL 2026 Auction Highlights: KKR Splurges on Cameron Green and Matheesha Pathirana

Kolkata Knight Riders made headlines during the IPL players’ auction by spending a staggering Rs 25.20 crore to secure Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, setting a new record for the highest price paid for an overseas player in IPL history. They also invested Rs 18 crore to acquire Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana. The auction saw significant interest in uncapped Indian players, with Uttar Pradesh’s Prashant Veer and Rajasthan’s Kartik Sharma both fetching Rs 14.20 crore deals, making them the highest-paid uncapped players ever in the IPL auction.

Major Signings and Records

The IPL auction was marked by some extraordinary signings, with Kolkata Knight Riders leading the charge. Cameron Green’s acquisition not only made him the most expensive overseas player in IPL auction history, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s previous record of Rs 24.75 crore, but also highlighted KKR’s aggressive strategy. The bidding war for Green was intense, particularly against Chennai Super Kings, but KKR ultimately emerged victorious. Following this, they turned their attention to Matheesha Pathirana, who became the costliest Sri Lankan player sold at an IPL auction after KKR entered the bidding once Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants withdrew.

In addition to these high-profile signings, the auction also featured significant investments in uncapped talent. Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, both young and promising players, attracted attention and secured lucrative contracts with Chennai Super Kings. Their deals, each worth Rs 14.20 crore, set a new benchmark for uncapped players in IPL history. This trend reflects a growing emphasis on nurturing young talent within the league.

Notable Player Movements

The auction also saw several notable players finding new homes. Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi Dar was picked up by Delhi Capitals for Rs 8.40 crore, a significant increase from his base price of Rs 30 lakh. Meanwhile, India internationals Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan initially went unsold but later found teams during the accelerated round. Sarfaraz joined Chennai Super Kings for Rs 75 lakh, while Shaw was acquired by Delhi Capitals for the same amount. Sarfaraz’s recent performance, including a remarkable 22-ball 73 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, likely contributed to his appeal.

Delhi Capitals also made a strategic move by signing New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson for Rs 2 crore, adding depth to their bowling lineup. The auction showcased a mix of established players and emerging talents, reflecting the franchises’ diverse strategies in building competitive teams.

Franchise Reactions and Future Prospects

KKR’s managing director, Venky Mysore, expressed satisfaction with the team’s marquee signing of Cameron Green. He emphasized the importance of Green’s addition to the squad, particularly with the expertise of their new power coach, Andre Russell. Mysore noted that while the Rs 18 crore rule imposed by the BCCI might seem like a concern, it ultimately represents an investment in player development for the franchise.

Cameron Green, who has previously played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, expressed his excitement about joining KKR. He looks forward to playing at the iconic Eden Gardens and contributing to the team’s success in the upcoming season. The auction also saw other franchises making significant moves, with Sunrisers Hyderabad acquiring England batter Liam Livingstone for Rs 13 crore and Lucknow Super Giants securing Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis for Rs 8.60 crore.
