Union Cabinet Launches ₹2481 Crore Natural Farming Mission
On November 25, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices throughout India. With an extensive financial backing of ₹2481 crore, composed of ₹1584 crore from the Centre and ₹897 crore from states, the mission is set to run until March 2026 under the 15th Finance Commission period.
The NMNF sets out to achieve several key objectives to transform the agricultural landscape. One of the primary goals is to encourage nature-based farming systems. This approach will enhance the use of bio-inputs that farmers create themselves, thereby reducing reliance on commercial fertilizers and lowering the overall cost of farming. Additionally, the mission aims to improve soil health and promote sustainable agriculture practices.
Integration of Livestock in Farming
Another significant focus of the NMNF is to promote livestock integrated farming systems, particularly those involving local cow breeds. This model is designed to harmonize animal husbandry with agriculture, fostering a more cohesive and productive farming environment.
Enhancing Research and Knowledge Transfer
The mission also aims to strengthen on-farm agroecological research and the extension capabilities of institutions like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and Agricultural Universities. By focusing on these areas, the NMNF intends to elevate the quality of farming techniques and knowledge available to local farmers.
Building upon experiences from existing natural farming practitioners, the mission seeks to develop and refine location-specific practices that will encourage wider adoption of natural farming methods. This includes utilizing scientific research to inform these practices effectively.
Certifying Naturally Grown Produce
A significant part of the NMNF involves establishing clear, scientifically-backed standards for the certification of naturally grown, chemical-free produce. This initiative aims to create a straightforward certification process that farmers can easily navigate.
Lastly, the NMNF plans to create and promote a unified national brand for chemical-free produce, aiming to increase market visibility and consumer trust in naturally farmed products.
This announcement was made by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Ramnath Thakur, during a session in Lok Sabha, outlining the ambitious steps the government is taking to foster a healthier, more sustainable agricultural environment in India.
