Government Boosts Scholarships for SC and OBC Students Across India

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) has announced that the centrally sponsored Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste (SC) students will continue to facilitate direct financially into beneficiaries’ accounts. This initiative, effective from the 2021-22 academic year, ensures that scholarship funds are transferred directly to Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts, enhancing transparency and efficiency in disbursing financial aid.

Under the scheme, the central government’s financial support relies on the timely transmission of state and union territory (UT) contribution data to the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). This integration means that eligible students studying at recognized institutions throughout India can benefit from a fully open-ended and demand-driven scholarship program.

Expanding Support for Diverse Communities

In addition to supporting SC students, the government is also implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Post Matric scholarships targeting Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Economically Backward Classes (EBC), and De-Notified Tribes (DNTs). This broader initiative aims to uplift various marginalized communities by providing essential financial support for their educational endeavors.

Ensuring Effective Implementation

To ensure efficient execution of these scholarship schemes, the government has undertaken several significant measures. These include regular national, regional, and state-level meetings, as well as field visits conducted by senior officials. This systematic oversight aims to foster accountability and improve the program’s impact.

Moreover, scholarship processing has been streamlined through the NSP, which allows for online management of applications from start to finish. The government is committed to providing ongoing support through hand-holding meetings and workshops designed to assist states and UTs that maintain their own scholarship portals.

Future of Scholarship Programs

As approved by the Expenditure Finance Committee and the Cabinet, the current scholarship rates for both the Post Matric scholarship for SC students and the scholarships for OBCs, EBCs, and DNTs will be maintained until the fiscal year 2025-26. Future reviews and revisions of these schemes will occur following established procedures, ensuring they remain relevant and effective.

For a transparent distribution process, all scholarships are disbursed via the designated portal. Additionally, any technical issues that arise are dealt with swiftly, ensuring that the system remains functional and accessible. This information was shared by Shri Ramdas Athawale, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, during a written inquiry in the Lok Sabha.
