Skill India Mission Empowers Youth With Vocational Training
The Government of India is making significant strides in preparing its youth for future employment through the Skill India Mission (SIM). Under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), the government is facilitating extensive training programs aimed at skill development, re-skilling, and up-skilling across various sectors. With the goal of equipping individuals with industry-relevant skills, these programs are available through various schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS), along with initiatives through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
As part of this mission, Skill Labs are being established in educational institutions such as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs). These dedicated spaces provide vocational training in numerous fields, including information technology and automotive studies. By integrating hands-on learning with academic education, these labs aim to prepare students for the job market more effectively.
The government aims to train 1,200 vocational teachers nationwide, providing two teachers for each participating school, which includes 600 schools—400 JNVs and 200 EMRS. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will implement this teacher training initiative, ensuring consistent and high-quality instruction.
During the setup of these vocational skill labs, schools selected specific skill subjects based on local industry needs, emerging career trends, and the aspirations of their students. This thoughtful approach fosters a connection between education and real-world employment opportunities. However, since these labs are newly established, there is currently no system for reviewing or updating the selected training sectors.
The ongoing effort is part of a broader strategy to provide vocational education across various states and union territories in India. The details of the skill labs that have been established can be found in the state’s annexures, with a specific focus on the achievements in places like Andhra Pradesh. For instance, Andhra Pradesh features a total of 50 EMRS skill labs and 30 JNVs. Detailed breakdowns by district and state highlight specific advancements in each region.
In addition to the established skill labs, a variety of sectors have been identified for future introduction in JNVs and EMRSs, ranging from Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) to Hospitality and Agriculture. This ensures that the educational focus aligns with the needs of the modern job market, preparing students for a diverse array of career opportunities.
