Gold and Silver Reach Record Highs Amid Fed Signals: Will Inflation Data Drive Additional Gains?

Gold and silver prices are poised to continue their remarkable ascent in the coming week, driven by a slew of global inflation data and macroeconomic indicators that could influence central bank policies. Analysts are particularly focused on inflation reports from major economies, including India, the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, key employment data and consumer sentiment surveys in the U.S. are expected to play a significant role in shaping bullion prices.

Inflation Data and Economic Indicators

Traders are gearing up for a busy week as they await crucial inflation data from various regions. In the U.S., the focus will be on non-farm payroll figures, weekly jobless claims, and housing indicators, all of which are likely to impact gold and silver prices. Pranav Mer, Vice President of EBG – Commodity & Currency Research at JM Financial Services, emphasized that the momentum for gold and silver will remain strong as traders analyze key data from China, along with inflation numbers from India, the U.S., and the U.K. The provisional manufacturing and services PMI readings from major economies will also be closely monitored.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures recently surged by Rs 3,160, or 2.42%, reaching record levels. This upward trend follows the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts and liquidity measures, although the central bank has adopted a cautious approach, indicating that it will wait for more data before considering further easing. This stance has led to a sell-off in U.S. treasuries and a weaker dollar, both of which have contributed to the rise in gold prices.

Geopolitical Tensions and Currency Fluctuations

Geopolitical tensions, particularly between the U.S. and Venezuela, have further enhanced gold’s appeal as a safe-haven asset. Concerns regarding the unwinding of yen carry trades ahead of the Bank of Japan’s anticipated rate hike have also played a role in boosting gold’s attractiveness. Last Friday, MCX gold reached a historic high of Rs 1,35,263 per 10 grams, driven by a weaker dollar and robust investor demand.

The depreciation of the Indian rupee against the U.S. dollar has amplified domestic gold returns. Pankaj Singh, a smallcase manager and founder of SmartWealth AI, noted that the rupee’s decline, attributed to trade frictions and persistent capital outflows, has reinforced gold’s status as a hedge for Indian investors. He expressed optimism about the medium-term outlook for gold prices.

Silver’s Continued Rally

Silver has also experienced a significant rally, marking its third consecutive week of gains. MCX silver futures rose by Rs 9,443, or 5.15%, reaching an all-time high of Rs 2,01,615 per kilogram before experiencing a slight pullback due to profit-taking. Internationally, silver futures surged by USD 2.95, or 5%, surpassing USD 65 per ounce for the first time.

Mer highlighted that silver prices surged past the Rs 2,00,000 mark in the domestic market, although a sharp sell-off occurred during the U.S. trading session. Investor participation in silver remains robust, with record ETF participation in India and heightened speculative interest in China’s silver market. Riya Singh, a research analyst at Emkay Global Financial Services, noted that silver’s support stems from falling yields, ample liquidity, central bank purchases, and strong industrial demand, particularly from the solar and electronics sectors.

Future Outlook for Precious Metals

Looking ahead, analysts predict that silver prices may continue to rise, with potential targets set between Rs 2,25,000 and Rs 2,40,000 per kilogram. The overall sentiment for precious metals remains bullish, with expectations of sustained upward momentum unless there are significant shifts in U.S. monetary policy. As the market navigates through various economic indicators and geopolitical developments, both gold and silver are likely to retain their appeal as safe-haven investments in the near term.
