Delhi-NCR Forms Expert Committee to Tackle Air Pollution from Vehicles
Vehicular emissions are a significant source of air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region, contributing substantially to the levels of harmful particles and gases like PM2.5, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). To address this pressing issue, the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has established an Expert Committee aimed at devising effective strategies for reducing air pollution caused by vehicles.
This newly formed committee comprises a diverse group of experts, including top academicians, health professionals, and automotive researchers. Their collective expertise will be pivotal in crafting a comprehensive plan to tackle emissions from the vehicular sector in the region. The committee is chaired by Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala from IIT Madras, alongside Dr. Randeep Guleria, the former director of AIIMS, Delhi, serving as the co-chair. Other notable members include representatives from various prestigious institutions, governmental bodies, and environmental organizations.
The committee’s primary objectives are to review existing policies and regulatory frameworks related to clean mobility, assess the contribution of vehicular emissions by different vehicle segments, and recommend necessary regulatory measures. Additionally, the experts will explore the feasibility of electric vehicle (EV) integration across different vehicle types, including factors such as technological readiness, infrastructure needs, and cost implications.
Furthermore, the committee aims to suggest further measures, as needed, to mitigate the air pollution caused by vehicles. Their recommendations are expected within a two-month timeframe, during which they may consult various stakeholders and present interim recommendations. The first meeting is scheduled for December 15, 2025, marking a significant step toward evidence-based policy action that seeks to enhance air quality and protect public health in the Delhi-NCR region.
