Boosting Organic Farming in Southern India: Key Updates
The Indian government has been actively promoting organic farming in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana through the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) since the 2015-16 financial year. This initiative provides financial assistance to farmers to help them transition to organic practices, ensuring better income and sustainable agricultural practices.
Under the PKVY, farmers receive a substantial benefit of Rs. 31,500 per hectare over a three-year period. This includes direct financial support of Rs. 15,000 per hectare through Direct Benefit Transfer to cover on-farm and off-farm organic inputs, as well as additional support for marketing their organic produce. The program aims to enhance the livelihoods of farmers by enabling them to cultivate organic crops.
Funding and Area Coverage
Since the inception of PKVY up to October 31, 2025, significant funds have been allocated to the four states to aid in this transition. The table below outlines the amount released and the area covered by the initiative:
| Name of State | Fund released (Rs. In Lakh) | Area covered (in ha) |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | 6236.35 | 32,940 |
| Karnataka | 10049.36 | 49,100 |
| Kerala | 6732.97 | 94,480 |
| Telangana | 3576.78 | 8,100 |
For the year 2024-25, it has been reported that significant numbers of farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have benefited from this scheme. Specifically, 11,630 farmers in Karnataka and 28,983 farmers in Tamil Nadu have received assistance. However, there has been no reported expenditure in Kerala and Telangana for the same period, indicating that funds allocated have not been utilized despite their availability.
Financial Allocations for Upcoming Years
The funding allocations for the states under the PKVY scheme over the last three years, along with projections for the current and upcoming years, are as follows:
| Name of the State | 2022-23 (Rs. in Lakhs) | 2023-24 | 2024-25 | 2025-26 |
