Government Boosts Copra Prices for 2026 Season
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the upcoming 2026 season. This decision aims to ensure fair remuneration for coconut farmers, following the commitment made in the Union Budget of 2018-19 to set MSP for all mandated crops at no less than 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.
For the 2026 season, the MSP for Fair Average Quality of milling copra will be set at Rs.12,027 per quintal, while ball copra will receive an MSP of Rs.12,500 per quintal. This marks an increase of Rs.445 per quintal for milling copra and Rs.400 per quintal for ball copra compared to the previous season. Notably, the MSP for milling copra has surged from Rs.5,250 per quintal in the 2014 marketing season, reflecting a remarkable growth of 129 percent.
Similarly, the MSP for ball copra has jumped from Rs.5,500 per quintal, showcasing a growth of 127 percent over the same period. This significant boost in MSP is expected to provide coconut growers with enhanced financial returns and encourage farmers to expand copra production to meet the increasing demand for coconut products in both domestic and international markets.
As part of the implementation of the Price Support Scheme (PSS), the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF) will continue to function as the Central Nodal Agencies (CNAs) responsible for copra procurement.
This move is part of a broader strategy to empower farmers and stabilize the agricultural sector. By increasing the MSP, the government aims to foster sustainable farming practices and promote agricultural growth in the copra sector.
