Government Launches PRASHAD Initiative to Boost Pilgrimage Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has officially launched the ‘National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive’ (PRASHAD) aimed at enhancing the development of crucial pilgrimage and heritage sites across the country. This initiative is designed to provide vital financial support to State Governments and Union Territory Administrations to bolster tourism infrastructure at these significant destinations.

Through PRASHAD, the government envisions a transformation in the pilgrimage experience for tourists by ensuring well-planned amenities that prioritize convenience, security, cleanliness, and accessibility. This comprehensive approach not only aims to revitalize the spiritual essence of pilgrimage cities but also fosters sustainable development practices, generating employment opportunities for local communities.

Collaboration for Comprehensive Development

To execute the PRASHAD program effectively, each State Government and Union Territory Administration is tasked with creating a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for identified projects. This planning process involves close collaboration with administrative bodies, local organizations, shrine authorities, religious trusts, and NGOs. These consultations are critical in preserving the spiritual integrity of these sites while enhancing the amenities available for tourists and pilgrims.

Capacity Building and Sustainable Practices

In addition to infrastructure development, the Ministry of Tourism is also focusing on skill enhancement through its ‘Capacity Building for Service Providers’ (CBSP) program. This initiative offers training, education, and certification to various tourism and hospitality service providers, ensuring an improved experience for visitors across all destinations involved in PRASHAD.

Furthermore, as part of the project proposals submitted to the Ministry, State Governments and UT Administrations will outline sustainable operation and maintenance plans. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the benefits of completed projects continue to serve communities and tourists alike, securing the longevity of these heritage sites.
