Google Pixel Watch 4 to Introduce ‘Double Pinch’ and ‘Wrist Turn’ Gesture Controls
Google is set to enhance the user experience for Pixel Watch 4 owners with the introduction of two innovative gesture controls: “Double pinch” and “Wrist turn.” These new features will allow users to manage notifications and calls more efficiently without needing to touch the screen. This update follows the existing “raise to talk” gesture, which activates the Gemini AI assistant, further streamlining interactions for smartwatch users.
New Gesture Controls for Enhanced Usability
The “Wrist turn” gesture enables users to dismiss notifications or incoming calls simply by rotating their wrist. This feature is reminiscent of Apple’s “wrist flick,” providing a hands-free way to manage alerts, especially when one hand is occupied. The second gesture, “Double pinch,” allows users to control various functions by pressing their index finger and thumb together. This intuitive motion can be used to answer or reject calls, start or stop music, and manage timers. Google aims to enhance one-handed operation, making it easier for users to navigate their devices with these simple gestures.
Currently, Google has not confirmed whether these new features will be available for the Pixel Watch 3 or earlier models. However, given that the “raise to talk” gesture was later introduced for the Pixel Watch 3, there is a possibility that users of older models may also receive these updates in the future.
Improvements to Smart Replies
In addition to the new gesture controls, Google has made significant improvements to the “smart replies” feature on both the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4. The latest version of this feature now operates directly on the watch, eliminating the need for cloud processing. This change results in replies being twice as fast and reduces battery consumption by half compared to previous models.
A recent internal study conducted by Google revealed that 97 percent of users found the new smart replies to be as good or better than the previous version. This update focuses on providing faster, more accurate, and private message suggestions without requiring an internet connection, enhancing the overall user experience.
Availability of Updates
Both the new gesture controls and the upgraded smart reply system will be rolled out through an upcoming firmware update.
