India and Russia Strengthen Economic Relations: Moscow Aims to Address Trade Deficit

Russia has expressed its willingness to address India’s concerns regarding the growing trade deficit, proposing a framework to protect bilateral trade from external pressures. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made these remarks ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to New Delhi. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing trade relations, energy cooperation, and defense projects, particularly in light of recent Western sanctions affecting crude oil supplies.

Addressing Trade Imbalances

During a recent press conference, Peskov acknowledged the significant trade imbalance between Russia and India, where India’s imports from Russia stand at approximately $65 billion, while Russian imports from India are only around $5 billion. He emphasized that Russia is eager to increase its imports from India to rectify this disparity. “We know our Indian friends are concerned about that,” Peskov stated, highlighting ongoing discussions aimed at boosting imports from India. This initiative aims to create a more balanced trade relationship and alleviate India’s worries about the widening trade gap.

Additionally, Peskov assured that Russia is taking measures to stabilize crude oil supplies, which had recently experienced fluctuations due to Western sanctions. He indicated that any potential dip in India’s purchase of Russian oil would be temporary, reinforcing Russia’s commitment to maintaining a steady supply for its Indian partners.

Creating a Resilient Trade Framework

Peskov proposed the establishment of a robust framework to insulate India-Russia trade from geopolitical pressures. He stressed the importance of developing a trade architecture that is free from external influences, particularly from third countries. “We should create an architecture of our relationship that must be free of any influence coming from any third country,” he asserted. This sentiment reflects Russia’s desire to protect its trade relations with India from the impact of U.S. sanctions and tariffs.

The Kremlin spokesperson also mentioned the potential for using national currencies in trade settlements, moving away from the dollar-denominated global payment system, which Russia views as a political tool. This shift could further strengthen the economic ties between the two nations, allowing them to navigate external pressures more effectively.

Strengthening Defense and Nuclear Cooperation

The upcoming summit between Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to cover various aspects of defense and nuclear cooperation. Peskov highlighted the joint production of the BrahMos missile system as a successful example of high-technology collaboration. Discussions may also include the potential supply of Su-57 fighter jets and additional S-400 air defense systems, showcasing the depth of military cooperation between the two countries.

Moreover, Peskov noted that cooperation in small and medium nuclear reactors would be a significant topic of discussion. Russia is prepared to share its expertise in this area, further solidifying its role as a key partner in India’s energy sector.

Broader Geopolitical Context

In the context of the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Peskov welcomed recent U.S. mediation efforts, describing them as “very effective.” He indicated that the situation in Ukraine would be a crucial topic during the Modi-Putin talks, with Russia remaining open to peaceful negotiations. Furthermore, Peskov expressed Russia’s readiness to collaborate with India on counter-terrorism initiatives and strengthen ties with Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of regional stability.

Overall, Peskov conveyed Russia’s commitment to standing alongside India during its period of growth, reinforcing the notion of a strong and enduring partnership between the two nations. As Putin prepares for his visit, the discussions are poised to shape the future of India-Russia relations in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
