Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Set for 2026 Launch with Innovative Design: Report

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to expand its foldable smartphone lineup with the anticipated launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2026. A recent listing in the GSMA database has revealed a device with the model number SM-F971U, which suggests that it may not be the budget Flip model previously speculated. Instead, this new information indicates that Samsung could introduce a second variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a fresh design that aims to enhance user experience.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Details

The model number SM-F971U aligns with Samsung’s established naming conventions for its Fold series, distinguishing it from the Flip series. Historically, Samsung has used the SM-F7xx format for Flip devices and the SM-F9xx format for Fold devices. The introduction of the F97x prefix supports the notion that this device is indeed part of the Fold lineup. Additionally, the listing includes a codename, H8, which deviates from the typical naming sequence of the Fold series. Previous models have followed a clear internal order, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 designated as SM-F956 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as SM-F966. The new codename suggests that Samsung is developing an additional Fold model to launch alongside the standard Galaxy Fold 8.

Wider Design May Address Long-Standing Feedback

Reports from South Korea earlier this year indicated that Samsung is exploring a wider foldable model, and the SM-F971U listing appears to align with this initiative. Early details suggest that the device may feature a shorter and wider cover display, potentially adopting an 18:9 aspect ratio. The inner screen could consist of two 18:9 panels merged together, resulting in a nearly square workspace. This new design aims to provide a broader front screen when closed, addressing ongoing user feedback regarding the narrow cover display of previous Fold models. By implementing these changes, Samsung hopes to enhance usability and overall satisfaction among its customers.

US Variant Appears First

The model number SM-F971U concludes with a “U,” indicating that this listing pertains to the US variant of the device. Samsung typically releases additional variants for other regions, including Europe and South Korea, following the initial launch. The early appearance of the US model suggests that the company is prioritizing this market, where competition with Apple is particularly fierce. Furthermore, this wider design may be a strategic response to reports indicating that Apple plans to introduce its first foldable iPhone in 2026, which is also expected to feature a compact and wide form factor. As Samsung prepares for this potential competition, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could play a crucial role in maintaining its position in the foldable smartphone market.
