Q2 GDP Growth Reaches 8.2%, Marking Fastest Expansion in Six Quarters

The Indian economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience, achieving an impressive 8.2% growth in the July-September quarter of 2025-26. This surge is attributed to a robust recovery in the manufacturing sector and vibrant services activity, marking the fastest expansion rate in six quarters. Strong domestic demand, particularly ahead of the festival season, has positioned India as the fastest-growing major economy, effectively countering the adverse effects of US tariffs.

Strong Economic Performance

India’s GDP growth of 8.2% in the second quarter reflects the positive impact of government policies and the hard work of its citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this achievement on social media, emphasizing the government’s commitment to advancing reforms and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. The economy also recorded a growth rate of 7.8% in the previous quarter, resulting in an overall expansion of 8% for the first half of the fiscal year. Economists and policymakers are optimistic about continued growth, anticipating a strong third quarter driven by increased sales following the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalization.

Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran expressed confidence that the full-year growth rate would exceed 7%, surpassing the government’s initial budget forecast of 6.5-6.8%. The government is implementing various reform measures, including new labor codes, to further stimulate economic activity. Additionally, low inflation and declining interest rates are contributing to a favorable economic environment.

Sectoral Contributions to Growth

The manufacturing sector has shown a significant turnaround, achieving a growth rate of 9.1% in the second quarter. The services sector has also experienced rapid expansion, while construction grew by 7.2%, albeit at a slightly slower pace compared to the same period last year. Agriculture reported a 3.5% increase, building on a 4.1% growth in the previous fiscal year.

Crisil’s chief economist, Dharmakirti Joshi, noted that private consumption has been the primary driver of this growth. The manufacturing and services sectors have seen substantial increases, aided by a statistical low-base effect from the previous year’s below-average growth of 5.6%. Lower inflation rates, particularly in food prices, have encouraged discretionary spending among consumers, further boosting economic activity.

Revised Economic Forecasts

The unexpected strength of the GDP growth figures has prompted economists to revise their forecasts for the fiscal year. The State Bank of India now projects a growth rate of 7.6%, while Crisil has increased its estimate by half a percentage point to 7%. However, caution remains regarding the potential impact of US tariffs in the latter half of the year.

Exports grew by 5.6% in the second quarter, benefiting from a weak base of just 3% growth in the same period last year. Conversely, imports surged by 12.8%. Devendra Kumar Pant, chief economist at India Ratings and Research, indicated that the effects of tariffs are beginning to manifest in export growth. Economists are closely monitoring these developments, as the balance between tariff impacts and the positive effects of GST reforms will be crucial for future growth.

Monetary Policy Outlook

As the economy continues to show strong growth amid low inflation, all eyes are on the upcoming meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, led by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The committee will deliberate on interest rates, considering the current economic landscape. The decisions made in this meeting will be pivotal in shaping the monetary policy framework and addressing the challenges posed by external factors such as tariffs while fostering domestic economic growth.
