Devajit Saikia Emphasizes BCCI’s Commitment to Long-Term Strategy Following India’s 0-2 Home Defeat

As India faced a disappointing whitewash against South Africa in Guwahati, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized the need for introspection regarding the Indian batters’ struggles against spin bowling at home. In an exclusive interview, Saikia highlighted the importance of adapting to various pitch conditions and expressed a desire to expand Test cricket to more venues across the country. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the recent transition in the team and the need for a long-term strategy to regain India’s status as the top Test team globally.

Challenges for Indian Batters

In light of the recent Test series loss, Saikia pointed out that the Indian batting lineup must improve its ability to handle spin bowling, especially on home soil. He noted that the team has seen a significant transition, with seasoned players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin stepping away from Test cricket. This shift has left the team with newer players who are still finding their footing in the longer format. Saikia stressed that adapting to different conditions is crucial for any Test cricketer, citing past legends like Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Gavaskar, who successfully adjusted their techniques based on varying pitch conditions.

Saikia’s comments come as experts have observed that foreign spinners have been increasingly effective against Indian batters, particularly in recent series. He acknowledged the need for “soul-searching” within the team to address these issues and improve performance against spin. The BCCI plans to engage in discussions to analyze the current batting strategies and make necessary adjustments to enhance the players’ comfort levels against spin bowling.

Future of Test Cricket Venues

Saikia also addressed the BCCI’s vision for expanding Test cricket to new venues, particularly in regions like the northeast. He expressed pride in bringing Test matches to Guwahati, stating that it signifies the growth of cricket infrastructure and culture in the area. Saikia explained that India’s vast geography necessitates diversifying cricket beyond traditional centers, which have historically dominated the sport. He emphasized the importance of spreading cricketing activities to smaller cities to foster talent and engagement across the country.

While acknowledging the logistical challenges posed by international tournaments, Saikia mentioned that the BCCI is committed to exploring more venues for future matches. He noted that while the T20 World Cup will be limited to five major cities, there is potential for expansion in other formats, as seen in the recent 2023 World Cup, which featured ten venues.

Long-Term Strategy and Women’s Cricket

In response to questions about immediate changes following the Test series defeat, Saikia reassured that the BCCI does not engage in knee-jerk reactions. He reiterated the organization’s commitment to a long-term plan for the team’s development, emphasizing that winning and losing are integral parts of the game. The BCCI will evaluate the team’s performance over time before making any significant changes.

Additionally, Saikia highlighted the BCCI’s plans to enhance women’s cricket in India. He mentioned that the board is looking to increase the contract values for centrally contracted female cricketers and is in discussions to introduce more multi-day tournaments in the upcoming seasons. This initiative aims to provide women cricketers with more opportunities to compete at higher levels and further develop the sport in the country.
