Samsung Faces Challenge to Retain Title of World’s Leading Smartphone Manufacturer

Samsung’s longstanding position as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer may soon be challenged, according to a recent report from Counterpoint Research. The analysis indicates that Apple is poised to surpass Samsung by 2025, driven by strong demand for the iPhone 17 series and a global upgrade cycle that is gaining momentum. If current trends continue, Apple is expected to reclaim its title as the top smartphone maker, a position it briefly held in 2023.

iPhone 17 Momentum is Reshaping the Market

The report highlights a significant surge in Apple’s sales, particularly following the launch of the iPhone 17. In its first month, sales of the iPhone 17 increased by 22%, even as the overall smartphone market experienced a decline of nearly 3%. A separate study by Counterpoint revealed that Apple’s sales in October grew by 37% year-over-year, contrasting sharply with the broader market’s modest 8% growth. Analysts attribute this success to the strong interest in the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models, which have significantly boosted Apple’s market outlook. Despite a lukewarm reception for the iPhone Air, the overall performance of the iPhone 17 lineup has been robust enough to maintain Apple’s upward trajectory.

A Massive Upgrade Cycle is Fueling Apple’s Rise

A critical factor contributing to Apple’s anticipated growth is the timing of smartphone upgrades. Many consumers who purchased devices during the pandemic are now ready to upgrade, and Apple is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. Counterpoint Research notes that between 2023 and mid-2025, approximately 358 million used iPhones were sold, creating a substantial base of users likely to transition to newer models. This influx of potential customers is expected to significantly bolster Apple’s sales figures in the coming years, further solidifying its market position.

Apple Expected to Stay No. 1 for Years

Despite Samsung’s plans for a strong 2025 lineup, which includes new foldable devices and AI-driven features, analysts predict that Apple’s momentum will sustain its lead well into the next decade. Counterpoint forecasts that Apple will maintain its top position until at least 2029, aided by anticipated product launches such as the company’s first foldable iPhone and the rumored iPhone 17e. The global smartphone market is projected to grow modestly by 3.3% in 2025, making Apple’s performance even more remarkable. With the holiday season approaching and expectations for record-breaking sales, the shift in market leadership could occur sooner than anticipated.
