Gold Price Forecast: Key Levels for Investors to Monitor in the Coming Days

Gold prices are poised for significant movement as speculation grows around a potential interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve in December. Praveen Singh, a Senior Fundamental Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, highlights that the outlook for gold and silver will be closely tied to shifts in rate cut probabilities. As of November 24, spot gold has shown resilience, recovering from earlier losses and trading higher, while the market awaits further economic data that could influence these predictions.

Current Gold Market Trends

On November 24, spot gold prices rebounded during the U.S. trading session, reflecting an increase in the probability of a December rate cut by the Federal Reserve. At that time, gold was trading at approximately $4,095, marking a nearly 0.70% increase for the day. In contrast, the MCX December gold contract in India was slightly down at ₹123,913, influenced by the strengthening of the Indian Rupee due to the Reserve Bank of India’s interventions and the anticipation of a Fed rate cut. The previous week, gold had closed 0.46% lower at $4,065, affected by a strong U.S. nonfarm payroll report. However, renewed hopes for a rate cut emerged after comments from New York Fed President John Williams, who indicated that the risks to the job market had increased while inflationary pressures had eased.

Economic Data Influencing Prices

Recent economic data released on November 21 revealed a slight increase in the U.S. composite PMI, rising from 54.60 to 54.8, driven by better-than-expected services PMI figures. However, consumer sentiment remains low, with the University of Michigan’s sentiment index stuck at a record low of 51. The UK and Eurozone also reported declines in their composite PMIs, while Japan’s figures exceeded expectations. Notably, the U.S. nonfarm payroll report indicated the addition of 119,000 jobs in September, significantly surpassing forecasts. Despite this, the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.44%, reflecting a slight increase in labor force participation. These mixed signals from the labor market and inflation expectations are contributing to the uncertainty surrounding future monetary policy.

Federal Reserve’s Stance and Market Reactions

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller recently stated that current economic data does not indicate significant changes in inflation, suggesting that the labor market remains weak. He advocated for a rate cut at the upcoming December policy meeting, emphasizing a flexible approach to future decisions. The probability of a December rate cut has surged to 71%, a notable increase from just 24% prior to Williams’s remarks. This shift in sentiment has led to fluctuations in the U.S. Dollar Index, which remained steady around 100.15, and slight movements in bond yields. The two-year yields increased marginally to 3.53%, while ten-year yields saw a minor decline.

Geopolitical Factors and Future Outlook

Geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and instability in the Middle East, continue to bolster demand for precious metals like gold and silver. The recent European leaders’ summit on Ukraine highlighted the need for further work on a U.S. peace plan, reflecting the complexities of the situation. Looking ahead, investors are closely monitoring upcoming U.S. economic data, including retail sales and consumer confidence reports, which could further influence market dynamics. In the short term, gold is expected to trade within a range of $3,980 to $4,200, with key resistance at $4,125. Silver is also anticipated to experience range trading, reacting to shifts in rate cut probabilities, with support levels identified at $49.30 and $48.60.
