IND vs SA: Highlights from India’s First Training Session After Surprising Loss to South Africa

During a recent optional practice session at Eden Gardens, Indian cricketers Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel showcased a unique training technique by wearing only one pad while facing spin bowlers. This unconventional approach, aimed at enhancing their batting skills, allows players to focus on using their bats for defense rather than relying on leg pads. Sudharsan’s participation in the upcoming match in Guwahati remains uncertain, especially after he missed the Eden Test. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s potential absence due to a neck spasm has led to discussions about possible replacements, including Sudharsan and all-rounder Nitish Reddy.

Innovative Training Techniques

During the nearly three-hour practice session, Sudharsan removed his right pad to extend his front-foot stride, which is crucial for facing spin bowling. This method emphasizes the importance of bat usage over leg protection, compelling players to rely on their skills to defend against deliveries. Sudharsan, a left-handed batter, faced challenges against pace bowling, with net bowlers frequently finding his outside edge. This training drill is particularly beneficial for left-handed players, as it encourages them to move forward and counter spin effectively. Jurel, a right-handed batter, also practiced without his right pad, focusing on reverse sweep shots that require significant forward movement.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir closely observed the session, providing guidance to Sudharsan and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who offered additional support during breaks. The practice aimed to address the common tendency among Indian left-handers to play on the back foot, especially when struggling to read spin deliveries. By removing the front pad, players can better engage with the ball and improve their overall technique.

Team Updates and Player Conditions

As the team prepares for the upcoming match in Guwahati, the absence of Shubman Gill due to a neck spasm raises concerns. Although he will travel with the team, his participation is doubtful. If Gill cannot play, he will head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for further assessment. In light of this situation, all-rounder Nitish Reddy has been withdrawn from the ongoing India A series against South Africa A in Rajkot to ensure he is available for selection.

Only six players participated in the optional practice session, including senior player Ravindra Jadeja, who had the longest batting stint. The management is keen to avoid scheduling conflicts, particularly with Reddy’s Wednesday match in Rajkot. Reddy, a right-handed batter with a Test century to his name, remains a strong candidate for the playing eleven should Gill be unable to take the field in Guwahati.

Focus on Injury Prevention

The unconventional practice methods employed by Sudharsan and Jurel also serve to minimize injury risks. By training without a front pad, players can develop better defensive techniques while being more aware of their body movements. This approach not only enhances their batting skills but also prepares them for the challenges posed by spin bowlers in competitive matches.

The decision to adopt this training style reflects a broader strategy aimed at improving the team’s performance against spin, especially in home conditions. With the Indian team facing a crucial match ahead, the focus remains on refining skills and ensuring that players are fit and ready to compete at the highest level. The coaching staff is dedicated to providing the necessary support and guidance to help players adapt to these innovative training techniques.
