Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada Celebrations Underway Nationwide with Cultural and Educational Activities
In a vibrant celebration of tribal culture and heritage, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in India is hosting a series of events as part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh (JJGV) Pakhwada from November 1 to 15, 2025. These programs, organized through various Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs), commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the revered tribal leader, Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The initiative aims to foster awareness, cultural pride, and inclusivity among tribal communities across the nation.
The celebrations are taking place in multiple states, each hosting unique events to honor tribal heritage. In Odisha, the Tribal Research Institute organized a special program for tribal students, focusing on the contributions of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The event included discussions on tribal identity and empowerment, while the Odisha State Tribal Museum engaged students through drawing and quiz competitions centered on tribal heritage. These activities aim to inspire the youth and instill a sense of pride in their cultural roots.
In Jharkhand, over 500 students from three schools participated in an educational tour to the Tribal Museum at the Tribal Research Institute in Ranchi. This immersive experience allowed students to explore traditional artifacts and learn about the historical contributions of tribal communities. The initiative seeks to enhance awareness and pride among young learners regarding their indigenous heritage.
Engaging Youth Through Cultural Activities
Arunachal Pradesh also joined the celebrations with a quiz competition organized by the Rajiv Gandhi University TRI, focusing on tribal history and freedom movements. Students from EMRS, Tizit, showcased their traditional attire, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural legacies. A performance by the Galo women’s group from West Siang District added to the festivities, celebrating tribal unity through traditional folk songs.
In Ladakh, the Tribal Research Institute at Kargil Campus hosted an interactive session on the traditional craft of Pabu making, aiming to revive this age-old skill and highlight its significance in sustaining the region’s cultural heritage. Meanwhile, Goa celebrated the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada with two major events, showcasing traditional music, dance, and sports, reflecting the vibrant tribal culture of the state.
Promoting Sports and Community Engagement
Andhra Pradesh held a State-Level Tribal Sports and Games Inauguration Ceremony at GITAM University in Visakhapatnam, which saw enthusiastic participation from tribal youth. This event emphasized the importance of physical fitness, sportsmanship, and cultural pride among tribal communities.
In Nagaland, a community-based tourism initiative at the tribal village of Temi Tarku highlighted sustainable tourism’s potential in promoting local livelihoods and preserving ecological balance. The event included a traditional Tug of War competition, fostering community spirit and participation among local youth.
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) contributed to the celebrations by organizing an International Conference on Mental Health, focusing on traditional healing practices and community-based approaches to mental wellness among tribal societies.
Future Initiatives and Community Involvement
In Telangana, a meeting with local Tahsildars was convened to review the implementation of tribal development programs. Awareness sessions were also held to encourage tribal youth towards self-employment and skill development, aligning with the Ministry’s broader empowerment initiatives.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, a nationwide “Jan Sunwai” (Public Hearing) is scheduled for November 13, 2025, across more than 56,000 Adi Sewa Kendras. This initiative aims to provide a platform for grievance redressal and community participation in local development. Citizens are encouraged to engage with their nearest Adi Sewa Kendra and share their experiences through the Adi Prasaran portal, reinforcing the collective commitment to tribal welfare and empowerment.
