G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment to Host 3-Day Himalayan Conclave
The G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) is set to host a significant three-day event, the Himalayan Conclave, from November 13 to 15, 2025, in Almora, Uttarakhand. This conclave, themed “Indian Himalayan Region–2047: Environmental Conservation with Sustainable Socio-Economic Growth,” aims to create a strategic vision for the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) by 2047. The initiative aligns with India’s broader goal of becoming a developed and sustainable economy by its centenary of independence.
Gathering Experts for a Sustainable Future
The Himalayan Conclave will convene a diverse group of stakeholders, including scientists, academicians, policymakers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations and local communities. Participants will engage in discussions focused on pressing issues such as environmental conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable livelihoods. The Indian Himalayan Region, which spans 11 states and two Union Territories, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. However, it faces numerous challenges, including climate change, demographic shifts, and unsustainable land-use practices. The conclave seeks to develop actionable strategies to tackle these challenges and establish a roadmap for sustainable growth in the region.
Thematic Focus Areas
During the three-day event, discussions will revolve around six key thematic areas. These include Himalayan biodiversity in the context of climate change, interactions between land, water, and atmosphere, and strategies for environmental sustainability and resilience building. Additional themes will cover socio-economic development, policy frameworks for regional cooperation, and promoting gender equality and social inclusion. Each theme will feature expert-led discussions, presentations, and open dialogues aimed at fostering resilience and sustainable socio-economic growth in the Himalayas.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
The conclave aims to revisit and revise the existing action plan for the Himalayas, considering the emerging environmental and socio-economic scenarios. It will focus on enhancing climate resilience, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and fostering a green economy. The event will also emphasize the importance of governance and regional collaboration while integrating gender equality and social inclusion into development planning. Furthermore, the conclave will explore ecosystem-based climate strategies, responsible tourism, and support for mountain communities through green entrepreneurship and local product development.
Collaborative Efforts for a Sustainable Future
The Himalayan Conclave is co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with various national and international organizations. Key collaborators include the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Department of Science and Technology, and several universities and NGOs. As the ecological backbone of the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas play a crucial role in balancing development with environmental integrity. The outcomes of this conclave are expected to yield strategies for managing groundwater, addressing land degradation, and implementing effective climate change measures. Ultimately, the event aims to contribute to an updated Himalayan Action Plan, guiding the region toward a secure, inclusive, and sustainable future amidst emerging challenges.
