Intel Files Lawsuit Against Former Employee for Alleged Theft of $250,000 in Confidential Data
Intel has taken legal action against former software engineer Jinfeng Luo, alleging that he stole approximately 18,000 confidential files, including documents marked as “Intel Top Secret,” just prior to his departure from the company. The semiconductor giant is seeking $250,000 in damages and demands the return of all stolen data. This lawsuit highlights ongoing concerns about intellectual property security within the tech industry, particularly in light of recent layoffs at Intel.
The lawsuit claims that Luo, who was employed at Intel from 2014 until his termination in July 2024, copied sensitive files from his work laptop to a network-attached storage device shortly before leaving the company. Intel’s security systems initially prevented his attempts to transfer the data, but he allegedly found a way to bypass these restrictions three days later. The company discovered the breach soon after and made several attempts to contact Luo through calls, emails, and letters, all of which went unanswered. Intel’s legal action underscores the importance of safeguarding proprietary information, especially during a period of significant restructuring and cost-cutting measures within the organization.
Previous Incidents and Current Status
This incident is not the first of its kind for Intel. A previous case involved another former engineer who was fined $34,000 and placed on probation for taking confidential information that later appeared at Microsoft. As for Luo, his current whereabouts remain unknown, and he has not publicly responded to the allegations against him. Intel asserts that the lawsuit is essential to protect its intellectual property and ongoing semiconductor projects, emphasizing the need for vigilance in an industry where data breaches can have far-reaching consequences.
Intel’s Expansion in India
In a separate development, Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, recently held a virtual meeting with Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan to discuss the company’s plans for expanding its semiconductor and artificial intelligence initiatives in India. This dialogue aligns with India’s strategic objectives under the India Semiconductor Mission and the IndiaAI initiative. The India Semiconductor Mission, which received approval in 2021 with an investment of ₹76,000 crore, aims to enhance chip manufacturing, design, and research capabilities in the country. By 2025, India is set to inaugurate its first 3-nanometer chip design centers in Noida and Bengaluru, with five semiconductor production units currently under construction. This expansion reflects Intel’s commitment to contributing to India’s growing technology landscape.
