Android Users in India Face Major Threat as Risky Apps Reach 40 Million Downloads
India has become the primary target for mobile malware, with a staggering 42 million downloads of malicious Android applications reported on the Google Play Store. A recent study by cloud security firm Zscaler reveals a significant increase in mobile cyberattacks from June 2024 to May 2025, placing Indian users at the highest risk globally. The report highlights the alarming trend of cybercriminals exploiting the growing reliance on mobile devices for work and financial transactions.
Zscaler’s investigation uncovered 239 malicious applications disguised as common productivity tools. Many of these apps were categorized under “Tools,” presenting themselves as workflow utilities, file managers, or performance enhancers. This strategy allowed them to evade user suspicion and accumulate millions of downloads. Before Google intervened and removed the flagged applications, they collectively surpassed 4 crore installs. Researchers believe that attackers have taken advantage of the ongoing hybrid work trend, specifically targeting users who depend on mobile devices for their professional activities.
Surge in Mobile Malware
The report indicates a staggering 67% increase in Android malware transactions year-over-year. Among the most significant threats are spyware and banking trojans, as cybercriminals shift their focus from card-based fraud to mobile payment theft and device-level surveillance. India stands out as the most affected nation, followed closely by Indonesia and Brazil, highlighting a concerning trend in mobile security vulnerabilities.
India: The Epicenter of Mobile Attacks
India accounts for an astonishing 26% of all global mobile attacks, reflecting a 38% rise from the previous year. With one of the largest Android user bases in the world and a rapid increase in UPI-based digital payment systems, the country presents a lucrative target for cybercriminals. In contrast, the United States continues to experience the highest volume of IoT attacks, with Hong Kong ranking second in this regard.
Zscaler’s report also points to a significant rise in cyberattacks targeting essential industries. The energy sector has experienced a dramatic 387% increase in attacks, jeopardizing critical infrastructure. Additionally, the manufacturing and transportation sectors account for over 40% of all IoT malware incidents, making them prime targets for device-level infiltration.
In light of these findings, security experts recommend that users remain vigilant. While Google has removed many of the malicious apps, millions of devices may still be at risk. Users are advised to delete any unknown or suspicious utility apps, refrain from installing applications outside the Play Store, keep their devices updated, enable Google Play Protect, and utilize trusted mobile security tools. As cybercriminals increasingly exploit India’s vast Android ecosystem, maintaining vigilance is essential for safeguarding personal and financial information.
