Apple’s Upcoming Foldable iPhone May Include 24MP Under-Display Camera, According to Report

Apple is gearing up to unveil its first foldable iPhone, tentatively named the iPhone Fold, as part of the anticipated iPhone 18 lineup. Set to launch in 2026, this innovative device will reportedly feature a groundbreaking 24MP under-display selfie camera, eliminating the need for a visible notch. Alongside the iPhone Fold, Apple plans to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Air 2, with a more affordable variant, possibly dubbed the iPhone 18e, expected to follow in early 2027.

Innovative Camera Technology

Recent reports from JPMorgan, shared via MacRumors, indicate that the iPhone Fold could be the first Apple device to incorporate a 24MP under-display selfie camera. This design innovation aims to enhance the user experience by removing the traditional notch or hole-punch design commonly seen in smartphones. Instead, the front camera will be positioned beneath the screen, allowing for a seamless display. Additionally, the foldable model may feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, as it is speculated that Face ID may not be included in this iteration.

Tech journalist Max Weinbach has also highlighted details from a JPMorgan report that outlines potential camera specifications for future iPhone models, ranging from the iPhone 16 to the iPhone 19. The report mentions an “underdisplay 24Mpx 6P” camera for the foldable iPhone, supporting earlier rumors about Apple’s advancements in camera technology. While the authenticity of the documents remains uncertain, they suggest that Apple is making significant strides in developing a high-resolution under-display camera.

Competitive Landscape

If the reports hold true, Apple will be the first company to introduce a 24MP under-display camera in a foldable smartphone. Samsung has previously implemented under-display cameras in its Galaxy Z Fold series, starting with the Fold 3, but those models utilized lower-resolution 4MP sensors. The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, expected to launch in mid-2026, will precede Apple’s foldable device but may not offer the same camera specifications, highlighting Apple’s potential edge in this competitive market.

The JPMorgan report also suggests that all models in the iPhone 18 lineup could feature 24MP 6P selfie cameras. Furthermore, the iPhone Fold may come equipped with two 48MP rear cameras, although the main wide sensor is reportedly not expected to include sensor-shift optical image stabilization. These features could position the iPhone Fold as a formidable contender in the foldable smartphone arena.

Market Readiness and Future Prospects

Despite the exciting prospects surrounding the iPhone Fold, analysts have noted some inconsistencies in the JPMorgan report, such as inaccuracies regarding storage options for the iPhone 17 lineup and the mention of “iPhone 19” instead of the anticipated “iPhone 20” for models expected in 2027. As of now, Apple has not officially confirmed any specifications or release timelines for the foldable device. However, insights from the supply chain suggest that the company is making progress toward entering the foldable smartphone market for the first time.
