Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya Announces Centenary Celebrations for Indian Hockey
The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has announced a grand celebration to commemorate 100 years of Indian hockey, which will take place on November 7, 2025. This milestone event, organized in collaboration with Hockey India, will be held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, with simultaneous celebrations occurring in over 550 districts across the country. The centenary festivities aim to honor the rich heritage of Indian hockey and inspire future generations to engage with the sport.
Celebrating a Century of Hockey Heritage
The centenary celebrations will kick off at 8:30 AM in New Delhi, featuring a series of events that reflect the glorious journey of Indian hockey. Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “As India celebrates 100 years of hockey, we honor a century of pride, perseverance, and national glory.” He highlighted the importance of remembering the heroes who have brought honor to the nation and expressed hope that the celebrations would inspire young athletes across the country. The events planned for this occasion aim to showcase the legacy of Indian hockey and encourage participation among youth, particularly in rural areas.
Highlighting Inclusivity and Teamwork
A key feature of the centenary celebration will be a 30-minute exhibition match between the Union Minister’s XI and Hockey India’s Mixed XI, which will include both men and women players. This match aims to promote gender parity and teamwork within the sport. Following the game, hockey legends from various generations will be honored for their contributions to India’s status as a leading hockey nation, which boasts eight Olympic gold medals and 13 podium finishes. The event will not only celebrate past achievements but also focus on the future of hockey in India.
Government Initiatives to Support Hockey
The Indian government has prioritized hockey as part of its sports development strategy. Under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Target Asian Games Group (TAGG), national teams receive funding for training, competitions, and other essential support. To promote women’s hockey, the Sports Ministry organizes the ASMITA hockey league at junior and sub-junior levels. Dr. Mandaviya reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing India’s sporting ecosystem through investments in infrastructure and institutional reforms, aiming to position India among the top sporting nations by 2036.
A Tribute to the Legacy of Indian Hockey
The centenary celebration will also feature the release of a commemorative volume titled “100 Years of Indian Hockey,” which chronicles the sport’s remarkable journey, including its triumphs and challenges. This publication will serve as both a historical record and a tribute to the generations of players who have shaped India’s hockey legacy. Additionally, a large-scale photo exhibition at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium will showcase rare archival photographs and memorabilia, celebrating 100 years of Indian hockey. Over 1,400 matches will be played simultaneously across 550 districts, involving more than 36,000 players, to create a festive atmosphere that unites the nation in honoring its national sport.
