The company has introduced a voluntary retirement program for employees as part of a strategy to consolidate its various AI-related units. SK Telecom has confirmed that the voluntary retirement program is designed to assist employees whose roles or work locations may be affected by the ongoing restructuring. A spokesperson emphasized that this initiative is not a downsizing measure and will not involve forced layoffs. Instead, it is intended to provide options for employees who may wish to leave the company voluntarily. Those who choose to remain may be reassigned to different regional offices, ensuring that their skills are utilized effectively within the organization.
The AI CIC unit, which reportedly employs around 1,000 individuals, has communicated the details of this program to staff at all levels, from junior to senior positions. The spokesperson noted that the specifics of the severance packages would vary based on tenure and position, but no internal targets have been set for participation in the program. The company acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding how many employees may opt for retirement, given that participation is entirely voluntary.

The establishment of AI CIC aims to unify SK Telecom’s various AI-related divisions into a centralized organization. Future Growth and Strategic Initiatives
As part of its restructuring efforts, SK Telecom is aiming to boost operational efficiency and drive growth within its AI division. The company has set ambitious revenue targets, projecting annual earnings of ₩5 trillion (approximately $3.5 billion) by 2030. This growth is expected to be fueled by AI-driven business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) services, along with the necessary infrastructure to support these initiatives.
Recently, SK Telecom has made strides in enhancing its AI infrastructure, including the introduction of Nvidia Blackwell GPUs-as-a-service. Additionally, the company has partnered with OpenAI to develop AI data centers in southwestern Korea as part of the ‘Stargate Korea’ initiative.
