Threads Introduces Group Chats as Messaging Expands to EU
Shortly after introducing direct messaging this summer, Instagram Threads has launched a new feature that allows users to create group chats with up to 50 participants. This update comes as the Meta-owned platform, which boasts over 400 million monthly active users, expands its messaging capabilities globally, including in the European Union where it was previously delayed. Users aged 18 and older can now share text posts, videos, GIFs, and emojis within these group chats, enhancing their interactive experience on the app.
New Messaging Features for Users
The introduction of group messaging on Threads aims to deepen connections among users. Emily Dalton Smith, the Vice President of Product Management at Threads, emphasized that the platform’s messaging features are designed for real-time conversations about shared interests, such as sports events or television shows. However, it is important to note that these group chats, like individual direct messages, will not be encrypted. Smith clarified that Threads does not position itself as a secure messaging service but rather as a tool for fostering engagement among users who are already in conversation.
Threads is also aligning its messaging features with Instagram’s broader strategy, which has seen a shift towards enhancing Reels and direct messaging. This focus reflects user engagement trends, prompting Threads to integrate messaging as a core component of its platform. In contrast, its main competitor, X, has been promoting its end-to-end encrypted chat service, XChat, although security experts have raised concerns about its reliability compared to established services like Signal.
User Control and Privacy Features
Threads provides users with control over their group chat interactions. To initiate a group chat, users must follow the person who is adding them, creating a more selective environment compared to individual direct messages, which can be received from anyone. This feature aims to enhance user privacy and reduce unwanted interactions. Additionally, Threads has implemented restrictions on individual direct messages, such as disabling links and media in message requests, and limiting the number of requests a user can send.
Users can also manage their message requests by turning off notifications from individuals they do not follow. To further combat spam, potential unwanted messages are filtered into a hidden folder, ensuring that users can maintain a more organized messaging experience.
Connecting Communities on Threads
In addition to the group chat feature, Threads allows users to name their chats and invite others via a shareable link, simplifying the process of connecting with like-minded individuals. This functionality is particularly beneficial for users looking to engage with specific communities within the app, which has introduced features aimed at helping users find interest groups.
Smith highlighted that Threads users often connect with different circles compared to their Instagram interactions. Notably, over a third of daily Threads users follow fewer than half the accounts they do on Instagram, indicating a trend towards forming unique connections on the platform. This suggests that Threads is fostering a distinct social environment where users can explore new relationships based on shared interests.
Global Rollout of Messaging Features
The rollout of group messaging is part of a broader expansion of Threads’ messaging capabilities, which will also be available to users in the European Union in the coming days. This launch will provide EU users with access to both individual and group chats, enhancing their overall experience on the platform. As Threads continues to evolve, it aims to create a more engaging and interactive environment for its users, reflecting the changing dynamics of social media communication.
