Apple Expands Renewable Energy Capacity by 650 Megawatts in Europe, with Future Projects in China

Apple has made a significant commitment to renewable energy, announcing on Tuesday that it has secured contracts for 650 megawatts of renewable power across Europe. This initiative includes both wind and solar projects that are either already operational or will be soon. A substantial portion of the energy generated will be used to offset the carbon footprint associated with Apple products, which account for nearly one-third of the company’s overall emissions.

Renewable Energy Projects Across Europe

Apple’s renewable energy strategy involves a diverse range of projects throughout Europe, despite the continent’s reputation for limited sunshine. The company is investing in several solar farms, including 110 megawatts each in Greece and Latvia, 131 megawatts in Spain, and 40 megawatts in Poland. Additionally, wind farms will contribute 99 megawatts in Romania, along with a portion of a 129-megawatt solar-wind portfolio in Italy. These projects are part of Apple’s broader effort to transition to renewable energy sources and reduce its environmental impact.

Investment in China’s Renewable Energy Transition

In a separate initiative, Apple has announced a $150 million investment in China aimed at helping its suppliers shift to renewable energy. Currently, over 90% of Apple’s manufacturing and production in China is powered by renewable sources. This investment underscores Apple’s commitment to sustainability and its recognition of the importance of clean energy in its supply chain. By supporting its suppliers in this transition, Apple aims to further reduce its carbon footprint and promote environmentally friendly practices within its operations.

Apple’s recent announcements align with a broader trend among major tech companies to invest in renewable energy. Firms like Microsoft and Meta have also been active in securing solar energy contracts, with Meta adding over 2 gigawatts of solar capacity this year and Microsoft increasing its total by 1.5 gigawatts. The push for renewable energy is driven not only by environmental concerns but also by practical considerations. Solar and wind energy have become some of the most cost-effective sources of new generating capacity, often undercutting traditional fossil fuels like coal and natural gas.

Solar farms can typically be constructed within 18 months, allowing companies to quickly secure power for their operations.
