IMF Adjusts India’s GDP Growth Forecast for 2025 to 6.6%

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has updated its projections for India’s economic growth, raising the GDP forecast for 2025 to 6.6%, while slightly lowering the estimate for 2026 to 6.2%. This revision reflects a strong performance in the first quarter of 2025, which has helped offset the impact of increased U.S. tariffs on Indian imports. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has expressed confidence in India’s economic reforms and digital initiatives, highlighting the country’s role as a key player in global economic recovery.

IMF’s Revised Growth Projections

In its latest World Economic Outlook report, the IMF has adjusted India’s GDP growth forecast for 2025 to 6.6%, an increase from the previous estimate of 6.4%. However, the organization has downgraded the growth projection for 2026 to 6.2%. The IMF attributes the upward revision for 2025 to a robust first quarter performance, which has more than compensated for the negative effects of rising U.S. tariffs on imports from India. The report indicates that, compared to earlier forecasts made before the tariff increases, the cumulative growth projection is now 0.2 percentage points lower. The IMF also forecasts global growth at 3.2% for this year and 3.1% for the next, marking a cumulative downgrade of 0.2 percentage points since last year.

Global Economic Context

The IMF’s report highlights a broader context of economic growth, projecting advanced economies to grow at approximately 1.5% during 2025-2026, with the United States expected to slow down to a growth rate of 2.0%. In contrast, emerging markets and developing economies are anticipated to experience a moderate growth rate just above 4.0%. The IMF has cautioned that it is too early to determine the full impact of the U.S. tariff increases on global growth, suggesting that the repercussions may still unfold. This context underscores the challenges and uncertainties facing the global economy, even as specific regions, like India, show promising growth trajectories.

India’s Economic Reforms and Digital Initiatives

During the IMF’s bi-annual meeting, Kristalina Georgieva praised India’s bold economic reforms and its successful implementation of digital strategies. She emphasized the significance of India’s digital identity program, which has been recognized as a groundbreaking achievement. Georgieva noted that many had doubted the feasibility of such a large-scale digital initiative, yet India has proven its critics wrong. She also highlighted recent reforms in taxation and digital payments, particularly the substantial modifications to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implemented in September. These reforms are seen as vital components of India’s economic strategy, contributing to its resilience and growth potential.

India’s Role in Global Economic Recovery

Georgieva has characterized India as a crucial engine for global economic recovery following the pandemic. She pointed out four key factors that bolster India’s economic stability: strengthened policy foundations, adaptability within the corporate sector, lower-than-expected impacts from tariffs, and supportive financial conditions. The IMF’s projections indicate that India, currently the fastest-growing major economy, is on track to surpass Japan and eventually Germany, positioning itself as the third-largest economy by nominal GDP, following the United States and China. Despite challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, experts believe that India’s strong domestic fundamentals will help sustain its GDP growth trajectory.
