Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav Attends Pre-COP30 Ministerial Roundtable in Brasilia
As the world approaches the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, India’s Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, emphasized the importance of multilateralism in global climate action. Speaking at the Pre-CoP30 Ministerial Roundtable in Brasilia, he highlighted the need for practical solutions to climate challenges and called for a focus on adaptation strategies. The upcoming CoP30, scheduled for November 10-21, 2025, in Belém, Brazil, aims to foster inclusive dialogue and actionable commitments among nations.
Commitment to Multilateralism
During his address, Minister Yadav underscored that CoP30 must reaffirm multilateralism as a fundamental principle of climate action. He commended the CoP30 Presidency for fostering an inclusive environment for discussions leading up to the conference. The minister stressed that translating global climate commitments into local actions is crucial for achieving tangible outcomes. He stated, “The focus must be on transforming climate commitments into real-world actions that accelerate implementation and directly improve people’s lives.” This approach aims to ensure that climate policies are not just theoretical but have a direct impact on communities worldwide.
Emphasis on Adaptation
Minister Yadav declared that CoP30 should prioritize adaptation efforts. He urged all participating countries to agree on a minimum package of indicators from the UAE-Belem Work Programme. He expressed the hope that the conference would send a powerful message through the Baku Adaptation Road Map, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the well-being of billions of people. “We are on the way to ensuring the safety and well-being of billions, leaving no one behind,” he asserted. This focus on adaptation reflects the urgent need for countries to address the immediate impacts of climate change.
Financial Support for Climate Action
The minister highlighted the necessity of increasing public finance for adaptation initiatives. He noted that enhancing financial flows could also encourage investments from other sources. With the Paris Agreement mechanisms now operational, he cautioned against undermining its framework by introducing new processes that could complicate existing efforts. Yadav emphasized the importance of learning from the first Global Stock Take (GST) and adapting strategies to fit national circumstances. This financial commitment is seen as vital for enabling countries to implement effective climate solutions.
India’s Role in Global Climate Initiatives
Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision, Minister Yadav affirmed India’s commitment to being part of the solution to climate challenges. He pointed to India’s initiatives, such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, as examples of cooperative and action-oriented multilateralism. He concluded by expressing hope that CoP30 in Belém would reinforce the global commitment to multilateralism, equity, and collective action, ultimately leading to measurable benefits for both people and the planet.
