September Mutual Fund Insights

Net inflows into equity mutual funds in India decreased for the second consecutive month in September, totaling ₹30,421 crore, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). This figure marks a 9% decline from August’s inflow of ₹33,430 crore and is significantly lower than July’s record inflow of ₹42,703 crore. Despite this moderation, September still represents the 55th consecutive month of net inflows into equity schemes, reflecting ongoing investor confidence in equities as a viable long-term investment option.

Equity Fund Inflows Show Signs of Moderation

The decline in equity mutual fund inflows has raised some eyebrows among analysts. Nehal Meshram, a Senior Analyst at Morningstar Investment Research India, noted that the recent slowdown appears to be cyclical rather than indicative of a structural change. This follows two months of exceptionally high inflows, suggesting that investors may be taking a breather after a period of robust activity. Ankur Punj, Managing Director and Business Head of Equirus Wealth, pointed to geopolitical uncertainties as a contributing factor to the softening inflows. Meanwhile, Viraj Gandhi, CEO of Samco Mutual Fund, highlighted a noticeable slowdown in thematic fund collections, which may also be influencing overall investment patterns.

Despite the dip in net inflows, Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) continued to show resilience. Contributions through SIPs rose to ₹29,361 crore in September, up from ₹28,265 crore in August. This indicates sustained retail participation in the market, even amid fluctuations. Meshram emphasized that while the pace of inflows has softened, the overall trend still reflects strong investor confidence in equities.

Sector Performance: Flexi-Cap and Precious Metals Shine

In terms of sector performance, flexi-cap funds led the way in equity inflows for September, attracting ₹7,029 crore. This marks the third consecutive month of strong interest in this category. Mid-cap and small-cap funds also saw significant inflows, with ₹5,085 crore and ₹4,363 crore, respectively. However, these inflows showed signs of slowing as investors became more cautious following recent market rallies. Large-cap funds recorded inflows of ₹2,319 crore, indicating a more measured approach from investors amid elevated valuations.

On the other hand, precious metals have emerged as a popular hedge against market volatility. Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) experienced record inflows of ₹8,363 crore in September, a significant increase from ₹2,190 crore in August. This surge pushed the total assets under management in Gold ETFs past the ₹90,000 crore mark. Silver ETFs also attracted notable inflows, reflecting a growing appetite among investors for metals-based diversification. Kartik Jain, MD and CEO of Shriram AMC, reported that multi-asset allocation funds recorded nearly ₹5,000 crore in inflows, largely driven by investments in gold and silver.

Debt Funds Experience Significant Withdrawals

In contrast to the equity market, debt funds faced substantial withdrawals in September, totaling ₹1.02 lakh crore. This marked a sharp reversal from the outflow of ₹7,980 crore recorded in August. The decline was primarily driven by large institutional redemptions from liquid and money market funds, which are often influenced by quarter-end liquidity adjustments and advance tax-related outflows. Meshram pointed out that these categories are particularly sensitive to seasonal liquidity cycles, which can lead to significant fluctuations in inflows and outflows.

Overall, the mutual fund industry experienced a net outflow of ₹43,146 crore in September, following inflows of ₹52,443 crore in August. Despite this, the total assets under management (AUM) saw a modest increase, rising to ₹75.61 lakh crore at the end of September, up from ₹75.12 lakh crore in August. This resilience in AUM suggests that the mutual fund sector is navigating through market volatility while maintaining a solid foundation.
