Ayushmann Khurrana Reveals Sooraj Barjatya and Dharma Productions’ Upcoming Film at FICCI Frames 2025

Ayushmann Khurrana recently engaged in a captivating discussion with journalist Mayank Shekhar during the opening day of the FICCI Frames 2025 event in Mumbai. The actor shared insights into his film choices, emphasizing his affinity for “hybrid films” that blend mainstream appeal with thought-provoking content. He also confirmed his upcoming projects with renowned filmmakers Sooraj Barjatya and Dharma Productions, highlighting his commitment to creating films that resonate with a broader audience.

Embracing Hybrid Cinema

During the conversation, Khurrana expressed his long-standing passion for hybrid films, which he defines as projects that balance entertainment with meaningful themes. He cited his earlier works, such as “Vicky Donor,” “Dum Laga Ke Haisha,” and the “Shubh Mangal” series, as examples of his commitment to this genre. Khurrana noted that these films typically operate on a lower budget while delivering high-quality content. He explained, “The risk-to-reward ratio is very different when you see it from my lens because these films are not very expensive.” His background in street theatre, where he often combined social issues with entertainment, has influenced his approach to filmmaking.

Khurrana emphasized the importance of maintaining an entertainment quotient that surpasses the underlying messages. He likened the audience’s experience to that of a child needing a sweet coating to make medicine palatable, stating, “Subtle messaging with entertainment is most important.” This philosophy reflects his desire to engage viewers while addressing significant topics.

Shifts in Post-Pandemic Cinema

When discussing the evolution of cinema in the wake of the pandemic, Khurrana acknowledged ongoing debates about the industry’s direction. He believes that a compelling script remains the cornerstone of successful filmmaking. However, he noted a shift in his own choices since the pandemic, moving away from taboo subjects while still embracing quirky narratives. “I am staying slightly away from taboo but not from quirk. So, it has to be for a bigger palette, more rooted, more commercial,” he explained.

This evolution in his film selection suggests a desire to reach a wider audience while still retaining his unique storytelling style. Khurrana’s insights reflect a broader trend in the industry as filmmakers adapt to changing audience preferences and expectations in a post-pandemic world.

Upcoming Projects and Collaborations

Khurrana also revealed details about his upcoming projects, including “Thamma,” which is set to be his first major release during the Diwali season. He confirmed collaborations with both Sooraj Barjatya and Dharma Productions, stating that these films are designed for a wider audience. “Lekin main beech mein panga leta rahunga. I’ll continue to do tedhi films as that’s my core!” he remarked, indicating his intention to balance mainstream projects with more unconventional roles.

This announcement marks a significant moment for Khurrana, as it is the first time he has publicly confirmed his involvement with these prominent production houses. His commitment to hybrid films and diverse storytelling continues to position him as a leading figure in contemporary Indian cinema, appealing to a broad spectrum of viewers while staying true to his artistic roots.
