Department of Food and Public Distribution Concludes Swachhta Hi Sewa-2025 Campaign

The Department of Food and Public Distribution in India successfully wrapped up the Swachhta Hi Sewa-2025 campaign on October 2, 2025, coinciding with the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The initiative, which began on September 17, aimed to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness across the nation. Various activities were organized, including cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns, and cultural events, all designed to engage the community and honor Gandhi’s vision of a clean India.

Engaging the Community in Cleanliness Initiatives

The Swachhta Hi Sewa-2025 campaign kicked off with a Swachhta pledge on September 17, 2025. Over the course of the two-week initiative, the Department of Food and Public Distribution, along with its public sector undertakings (PSUs) and subordinate offices, conducted a series of activities aimed at promoting cleanliness. These included cleaning campaigns at Centralized Training Units (CTUs), door-to-door awareness initiatives, and drawing competitions for children. The campaign also featured a walkathon, tree plantation drives under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” and a special event on September 25, where participants dedicated an hour to cleanliness activities. Cultural programs such as poem recitations and street plays were also organized to further engage the public.

Commemorating Mahatma Gandhi

On October 2, the Department marked the conclusion of the campaign by paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, reinforcing the message of cleanliness as a symbol of dignity. The day, celebrated as Swachh Bharat Diwas, saw officers and staff actively participating in cleaning activities, symbolizing their commitment to Gandhi’s ideals. The event served as a reminder that Gandhi Jayanti is not only a day of remembrance but also an opportunity to embody his vision of a clean and healthy environment.

Recognizing the Efforts of Safai Mitras

As part of the concluding ceremonies, the Department of Food and Public Distribution honored the Safai Mitras—those dedicated workers who play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness. Gifts and awards were distributed to these individuals in recognition of their hard work and commitment to the campaign. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) also held a similar event, celebrating the contributions of Safai Workers at its headquarters. The Executive Director and senior officials presented awards to acknowledge their efforts in promoting cleanliness across various FCI offices and depots nationwide.

Inspiring Future Generations

The campaign’s impact extended beyond immediate cleanliness efforts. Various organizations, including IGMRI-Ludhiana and IGMRI-Hyderabad, organized programs to inspire participants to adopt Gandhiji’s principles of truth, non-violence, and simplicity in their daily lives. Awards were presented to Safai Mitras who significantly contributed to maintaining cleanliness, reinforcing the importance of these values in fostering a cleaner environment. The Swachhta Hi Sewa-2025 campaign not only aimed to enhance public awareness but also sought to instill a sense of responsibility among citizens to uphold the ideals of cleanliness and sustainability.
