Perplexity Launches Free Comet AI Browser; Max Users Introduced to New ‘Background Assistant’

AI search startup Perplexity has announced that its innovative Comet browser will now be available for free to users worldwide. This strategic move aims to position Comet as a competitive alternative to established browsers and search engines. Additionally, Perplexity has introduced a new “background assistant” feature for paid subscribers, enhancing the browser’s functionality for multitasking.

Launch and Features of Comet Browser

Perplexity initially rolled out the Comet browser to subscribers of its premium $200-per-month Max plan three months ago. Since then, the demand has surged, with millions of users signing up for the waitlist to access the browser. Comet’s standout feature is its sidecar assistant, which operates alongside users as they browse the internet. This assistant is designed to answer questions about the current web page, summarize content, manage web information, and even navigate pages on behalf of the user.

The decision to make Comet free comes as Perplexity faces stiff competition from established players like Google Chrome and emerging contenders such as The Browser Company’s AI-driven browser, Dia. The timing is also significant, coinciding with the anticipated launch of OpenAI’s own AI-powered browser. To attract users away from their current browsers, Perplexity must demonstrate that Comet’s capabilities can deliver tangible productivity improvements.

Features for Free and Paid Users

While free users will primarily benefit from the sidecar assistant, they will also have access to various tools designed to enhance their browsing experience. These tools include Discover, which offers personalized news and content recommendations; Spaces, for organizing and managing projects; Shopping, which helps users compare prices and find deals; Travel, providing aggregated information on destinations and accommodations; Finance, offering budgeting and expense tracking tools; and Sports, delivering updates on scores and schedules.

For those who subscribe to the Max plan, additional features are available. Max users can utilize high-performing AI models and access an email assistant that drafts replies, organizes inboxes, schedules meetings, and answers queries related to emails. Furthermore, Max subscribers will receive early access to new products and features, including the recently announced background assistant.

Background Assistant: A New Level of Multitasking

The newly introduced background assistant is described by a company spokesperson as “a team of assistants working for you,” which can be managed from a central dashboard akin to a “mission control.” This assistant is capable of performing multiple tasks simultaneously while users focus on other activities. For instance, users can instruct the assistant to send an email, add concert tickets to their cart, and search for the best flight options—all while they attend to other tasks.

Users can monitor the progress of these tasks through the dashboard and can intervene at any point to complete actions, such as sending an email. The assistant will notify users upon task completion. Enhanced connectivity allows the background assistant to access other applications on the user’s computer, further streamlining the multitasking experience.

Subscription Options and Future Developments

For free users seeking additional features, Perplexity will offer a standalone subscription to Comet Plus for $5 per month. This upcoming product aims to provide an AI-enhanced alternative to Apple News. Pro users, who pay $20 per month for advanced AI capabilities, will automatically gain access to Comet Plus, as will Max users.

As Perplexity continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the introduction of the Comet browser and its accompanying features marks a significant step in the company’s mission to redefine the browsing experience. With a focus on user productivity and enhanced functionality, Perplexity is poised to challenge the dominance of established browsers in the market.
