Ministry of Rural Development Conducts Cleanliness Drives and Activities for ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025’
The Ministry of Rural Development has actively engaged in the nationwide campaign, ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025,’ which ran from September 17 to October 2, 2025. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, embodies Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of cleanliness and civic responsibility. The campaign has seen enthusiastic participation from officials, staff, and community members, highlighting the importance of collective action in promoting sanitation and hygiene across India.
Pledge Taking Ceremony Marks Campaign Launch
On September 22, 2025, the Ministry held a significant Pledge Taking Ceremony at Kartavya Bhawan-3 in New Delhi. The Secretary of Rural Development led the ceremony, emphasizing the commitment of individuals and institutions to cleanliness in all aspects of life. Participants pledged to dedicate 100 hours each year to voluntary cleanliness activities. They also committed to inspiring others and promoting the Swachh Bharat Mission through both direct engagement and digital outreach. This ceremony set a positive tone for the campaign, encouraging widespread involvement in cleanliness initiatives.
Community Engagement Through Mass Cleanliness Drive
A one-day Mass Cleanliness Drive, known as Shramdaan, took place on September 25, 2025, in the park area opposite Gate No. 1, Kartavya Bhawan-3. The event, led by the Secretary of Rural Development, aimed to foster community spirit and collective action. Officers, staff, and local citizens came together to participate in this initiative, which underscored the significance of community-led sanitation efforts. This drive was part of the lead-up to Swachh Bharat Diwas, celebrated on October 2, and highlighted the importance of civic engagement in maintaining cleanliness.
Creative Outreach and Educational Initiatives
On September 26, 2025, the Ministry organized a drawing competition titled ‘Swachhotsav’ at the Unnati Conference Hall in Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. This event attracted enthusiastic participation from children of Ministry staff, employees, and stakeholders. The competition encouraged creative expression while raising awareness about hygiene and sanitation among young minds. The event was documented through photography and videography to ensure the message reached a broader audience, reinforcing the campaign’s educational aspect.
Nationwide Plantation Drive and State-Level Initiatives
In addition to the activities at the Ministry level, the Department of Rural Development issued advisories to all States and Union Territories for organizing ‘Swachhata Hi Seva – 2025’ activities at Amrit Sarovar sites. States were encouraged to mobilize local communities, including MGNREGA functionaries, self-help groups, and students, to participate in cleanliness initiatives. The campaign’s theme, “Swachhotsav – Connecting Cleanliness with Festivity,” called for various activities, including voluntary Shramdaan and recognition ceremonies for sanitation workers. Furthermore, a Nationwide Plantation Drive was promoted, urging the planting of five lakh seedlings of native species, thereby fostering a movement for ecological restoration and environmental sustainability. Through these efforts, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Swachh Bharat Mission and Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for a cleaner India.
