Union Home Minister Amit Shah Affirms Modi Government’s Support for Flood-Affected People in Punjab
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reaffirmed the Modi government’s commitment to supporting the flood-affected residents of Punjab. During a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in New Delhi, Shah discussed the extensive damage caused by recent floods and the need for additional financial assistance for disaster relief. The central government has already provided substantial support, and further measures are being considered to aid recovery efforts in the state.
Meeting Between Union Home Minister and Punjab Chief Minister
In a crucial meeting held in New Delhi, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the severe impact of the recent floods in Punjab. Mann highlighted the urgent need for additional funds to assist in disaster relief and restoration efforts. The floods, which occurred during the monsoon season, have caused significant damage across the state, prompting the Chief Minister to seek immediate financial support from the central government. Shah assured Mann that the Modi government stands firmly with the people of Punjab and is committed to providing all necessary assistance.
Financial Assistance and Resources Available
During their discussion, it was revealed that the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) currently holds sufficient resources amounting to ₹12,589.59 crore. These funds can be utilized for immediate relief and restoration efforts in accordance with the Government of India’s guidelines. The central government has mobilized various agencies to assist the state administration in search and rescue operations, as well as in the immediate restoration of affected areas. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the needs of the flood-affected population are met swiftly and effectively.
Prime Minister’s Visit and Financial Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Punjab on September 9, 2025, to assess the flood situation firsthand. During this visit, he announced a financial package of ₹1,600 crore to aid the state in its recovery efforts. So far, ₹805 crore has been disbursed to the Punjab government and intended beneficiaries through various schemes, with the remaining funds to be released upon receipt of necessary documentation from the state. This financial support is part of the government’s broader strategy to address the aftermath of the floods and facilitate the recovery process.
Future Plans for Recovery and Reconstruction
In addition to immediate relief efforts, the Punjab government is encouraged to develop a comprehensive recovery and reconstruction plan. The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued guidelines for Recovery and Reconstruction (R&R) funding under the SDRF and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). These guidelines emphasize the importance of conducting a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) to evaluate the recovery and reconstruction needs in collaboration with relevant authorities. The establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on September 1, 2025, further underscores the central government’s proactive approach to assessing damages and facilitating recovery efforts in Punjab.
