Burnt’s co-founder and CEO, Joseph Jacob, has a deep-rooted connection to the food industry. His family has been involved in various aspects of the seafood supply chain for generations. Jacob’s firsthand experience working on the factory floor of a shrimp processing plant in India exposed him to the complexities and inefficiencies that plague the industry. Upon returning to the U.S. and managing seafood imports, he encountered significant challenges, particularly with outdated software systems. “In a business with razor-thin margins, itโs nearly impossible to succeed without good supply chain management,” Jacob stated. His frustrations with traditional enterprise software led him to create a solution tailored to the industry’s unique needs.
Burnt’s approach is distinct from previous attempts to modernize food supply chains. Instead of requiring companies to overhaul their existing systems, Burnt’s AI agents work alongside current software, enhancing productivity without the need for extensive changes. This method addresses the skepticism many operators have towards new technology, as they have often been burned by failed software implementations in the past. Jacob emphasizes that the goal is to allow teams to maintain their existing processes while benefiting from automation.
Transforming Order Management with AI
One of Burnt’s key innovations is its AI agent, Ozai, which automates the order-entry process for food distributors. Currently, sales representatives receive orders through various channels, including emails, phone calls, and even faxes, which they must manually input into their systems. This labor-intensive process consumes valuable time that could be better spent on customer engagement and sales growth. Ozai aims to alleviate this burden by managing up to 80% of the workflows that are currently bogged down by legacy systems.
Since its launch in January, Burnt has already processed over $10 million in monthly orders across various sectors, including seafood and packaged foods. The company is currently working with one of the largest food conglomerates in the U.K., which is in the process of implementing Burnt’s system. Jacob reports that the startup is generating six-figure revenue and is experiencing steady month-on-month growth, although he has not disclosed specific figures.
Building Trust in a Skeptical Industry
Despite the promising technology, securing investment for Burnt was not without its challenges. Many venture capitalists were hesitant to invest in AI solutions for food distribution, often due to a lack of understanding of the market’s potential. However, Jacob found a supportive partner in Penny Jar Capital, which focuses on investing in overlooked industries where technology adoption is lagging. “Two decades of missed software adoption is a massive opportunity,” Jacob noted, highlighting the potential for significant growth if executed correctly.
The team’s industry experience has been instrumental in building trust within the food supply chain sector. Jacob’s co-founders also bring valuable backgrounds to the table. Rhea Karimpanal, Burnt’s Chief Product Officer, comes from a family that operated restaurants, while CTO Chandru Shanmugasundaram has developed software systems for restaurant applications. Their collective expertise helps to reassure potential clients that Burnt understands the unique challenges of the industry.
As Burnt continues to grow and refine its offerings, it aims to reshape the landscape of food supply chains, making them more efficient and less reliant on outdated practices.
