Russia Criticizes Trump Tariffs, Emphasizing the Historical Significance of India and China

Russia has criticized the United States for its recent tariff threats against India and China, labeling these nations as “ancient civilisations” that will not yield to such pressure. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking on the Russian television program “The Great Game,” emphasized that the U.S. approach of imposing tariffs to influence these countries is ineffective. His remarks come amid rising tensions over India’s continued oil imports from Russia during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has drawn sharp criticism from Washington.

Russia’s Stance on U.S. Tariff Threats

In a pointed response to U.S. tariff threats, Sergei Lavrov asserted that both India and China, with their rich historical legacies, are unlikely to be swayed by American ultimatums. He remarked that the ongoing diplomatic interactions between Beijing and Washington, as well as New Delhi and Washington, indicate that the U.S. recognizes the futility of its tactics. Lavrov’s comments were made against the backdrop of escalating U.S. criticism of India for its oil purchases from Russia, despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Trump administration had recently increased tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50%, directly linking these measures to India’s energy trade with Moscow.

Lavrov pointed out that such trade threats have compelled countries like India and China to explore alternative markets and energy sources, often at a higher cost. He noted that this not only undermines the economic stability of these nations but also creates significant challenges, forcing them to adapt to new market dynamics. Furthermore, he highlighted a moral and political opposition to the U.S. approach, suggesting that it lacks a constructive diplomatic foundation.

Contradictory U.S. Policies

During a recent visit to Britain, former President Donald Trump expressed a contradictory stance regarding U.S.-India relations. While he emphasized his close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he simultaneously defended the sanctions imposed on India for its oil trade with Russia. Trump stated, “I am very close to India and to the PM of India,” yet acknowledged that he sanctioned the country for its energy dealings with Moscow. He argued that reducing oil prices could pressure Russia to withdraw from the conflict in Ukraine, framing India’s actions as unfair to the U.S.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro echoed this sentiment, labeling India as the “maharaja of tariffs” and accusing Indian refiners of profiting from their dealings with Russian suppliers. Navarro claimed that Indian refiners were benefiting from unfair trade practices, suggesting that the profits were being used to fund Russian military efforts. This rhetoric underscores the growing tensions between the U.S. and India over energy trade and economic policies.

Russia’s Response to Sanctions

In response to the ongoing sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies, Lavrov downplayed their impact, asserting that Russia has adapted to such measures. He remarked that the sanctions imposed during Trump’s presidency were unprecedented and that Russia has learned to navigate the challenges they present. Lavrov criticized the U.S. for relying on sanctions as a substitute for diplomatic engagement, suggesting that this approach has hindered any potential for compromise.

Despite the rising tariffs and geopolitical pressures, India and the U.S. have been engaged in discussions for an interim trade deal in recent months. However, as both nations assert their independence, backed by Russia, the future of U.S.-India relations remains uncertain. The ongoing dialogue reflects the complexities of international trade and diplomacy in a rapidly changing global landscape, where economic interests and political alliances are continually evolving.
