National Symposium on Pharmacovigilance Inaugurated in Gwalior for World Patient Safety Day 2025
To mark World Patient Safety Day 2025, the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and its Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI) in Gwalior have launched a two-day National Symposium focused on pharmacovigilance in Ayurveda. The event, titled “Pharmacovigilance – Shishu Suraksha: Rashtra Suraksha,” aims to enhance safety measures for newborns and children within Ayurvedic practices. The symposium features prominent speakers and aims to address the critical need for vigilance in pediatric care.
Inauguration and Keynote Addresses
The symposium commenced with a formal inauguration attended by distinguished guests, including Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Mehra, Chairman of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), who served as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Prof. (Dr.) Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of CCRAS, and Dr. N. Srikanth, Deputy DG of CCRAS. During the opening ceremony, a commemorative souvenir was unveiled, marking the significance of the event. Prof. Mehra praised the initiative, emphasizing the essential role of pharmacovigilance in ensuring patient safety, particularly for children. Prof. Acharya highlighted the historical context of pharmacovigilance in Ayurveda and urged participants to remain vigilant regarding Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). Dr. Srikanth reinforced the moral obligation to prioritize pediatric safety in healthcare.
Scientific Sessions and CME Credits
For the first time, the symposium offered NCISM-approved Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit scores, a significant milestone announced in the presence of Prof. Sushrut and representatives from the State Ayush Registration Board. Over the two days, the event featured eight scientific sessions dedicated to pharmacovigilance in child health and Ayurveda. More than 28 research papers and 31 posters were presented by postgraduate and PhD scholars, research officers, and faculty members. Esteemed experts, including Prof. Vikash Medhi from PGI Chandigarh and Prof. Ravi Ambey from GMRC, contributed valuable insights into the discussions surrounding pharmacovigilance and patient safety.
Focus on Pediatric Drug Safety
The symposium underscored the critical importance of safe drug practices and the timely reporting of ADRs, particularly in pediatric care. The theme “Shishu Suraksha: Rashtra Suraksha” resonated throughout the event, emphasizing the need for vigilance in safeguarding the health of children. The gathering attracted over 150 participants, including Ayurveda physicians, research scholars, and faculty members from various institutions across the country. The collaborative effort aims to strengthen pharmacovigilance practices within Ayurveda, ensuring that patient safety remains a top priority.
