Zoom Unveils Cross-Application AI Notetaker and AI Avatars in Latest Update

Zoom has unveiled an array of innovative products at its recent Zoomtopia conference, showcasing an upgraded AI companion designed to enhance user experience across various meeting applications. Among the new features are personalized note-taking capabilities, AI-driven meeting scheduling, and photorealistic avatars that mimic users. These advancements aim to position Zoom competitively against specialized meeting startups and comprehensive productivity suites.

Enhanced AI Companion Features

Zoom’s upgraded AI companion is set to revolutionize the way users interact during meetings. Historically, the company has provided an AI bot capable of recording and transcribing meetings. However, with the rise of competitors like Read AI and Otter, Zoom is expanding its AI capabilities to work seamlessly with other platforms, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. This integration allows the AI to take notes during in-person meetings, ensuring that users can capture essential information regardless of the platform used. Additionally, users will now have the option to jot down their own notes during meetings, which the AI can later refine and organize, enhancing productivity and collaboration.

Innovative Calendar Features

In a bid to streamline scheduling, Zoom is introducing new calendar-related features through its AI companion. Users will benefit from the ability to identify optimal time slots for all meeting participants, making scheduling more efficient. Furthermore, the AI will suggest meetings that can be skipped, helping users manage their time better. This feature echoes a similar tool launched by calendar service Clockwise last year, which also aims to resolve meeting conflicts. Alongside these scheduling enhancements, Zoom will provide proactive meeting recommendations, including suggested tasks and agenda items to prepare for upcoming discussions.

Photorealistic Avatars and Meeting Enhancements

Zoom is also set to launch photorealistic avatars, a feature that has been in the works for some time. These avatars will replicate users’ actions during video calls, offering a solution for those who may not always be camera-ready. While this feature promises to enhance user engagement, it also raises concerns about potential misuse, such as deepfake risks, prompting corporate IT departments to consider implementing restrictions. Additionally, hosts will be able to utilize Zoom Clips, an asynchronous video tool, along with AI avatars to welcome participants in waiting rooms and clarify meeting objectives.

New AI-Powered Tools and Interface Upgrades

The latest updates from Zoom also include a revamped web interface that prominently features the AI companion. Users can expect to see new AI-powered tools, such as a writing assistant for drafting emails and documents, as well as a deep research feature to facilitate information gathering. Moreover, Zoom will enable the creation of custom AI agents, supporting the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for enhanced functionality. Other technical improvements include higher bit rates and 60 frames per second support for meetings, alongside a new video management tool to help users manage their video assets effectively. These updates are expected to be available to consumers by the end of the year, marking a significant step forward in Zoom’s commitment to enhancing user experience through innovative technology.
