TDB-DST Announces Support for Development of India’s First 240-Volt Electric Motorcycle Platform

The Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Department of Science & Technology has announced its support for the development of a groundbreaking 240-volt electric motorcycle platform, marking a significant advancement in India’s two-wheeler industry. This innovative project, led by Chennai-based Raptee Energy Pvt. Ltd., aims to harness high-voltage technology, which has already proven successful in electric cars, to enhance the efficiency and charging capabilities of electric motorcycles. The initiative aligns with the government’s vision for sustainable development and aims to bolster domestic innovation in the electric vehicle sector.

Innovative High-Voltage Technology

The new electric motorcycle platform is designed to operate on a 240-volt DC architecture, which is expected to provide several advantages over traditional electric motorcycles. This high-voltage system will facilitate faster charging times and improved energy efficiency, making it a more attractive option for consumers. Additionally, the motorcycle will be compatible with India’s growing public charging infrastructure, ensuring that users have access to convenient charging solutions. This integration of advanced technology is a significant step towards making electric two-wheelers more viable for everyday use.

Advanced Battery Development

To support the high-voltage system, Raptee Energy has developed a specialized battery pack that has received certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The companyโ€™s dedicated research and development unit, recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), has invested over six years in creating the necessary components for this project. Their expertise encompasses a wide range of areas, including electronics, mechanical systems, and embedded software. This comprehensive approach ensures that the motorcycle’s components are not only high-quality but also contribute to the overall value addition within the country.

Smart Connectivity and Sustainable Practices

The electric motorcycle will also feature smart connectivity options, such as remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates, enhancing the user experience and ensuring that the vehicle remains up-to-date with the latest technology. Furthermore, the project emphasizes sustainable manufacturing practices, aiming for zero waste and no external emissions during production. This commitment to sustainability aligns with the Indian government’s priorities, particularly the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes self-reliance in the manufacturing sector. The project also supports key Sustainable Development Goals, including those focused on sustainable cities and climate action.

Industry Perspectives

Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the TDB, expressed optimism about the project, stating that high-voltage technology in electric two-wheelers could significantly accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India. He emphasized that TDB’s support aims to foster domestic innovation and strengthen local research and development capabilities. Dinesh Arjun, CEO of Raptee Energy, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that TDB’s backing validates their long-term research efforts and positions the company to scale its high-voltage motorcycle platform. This collaboration is seen as a crucial step towards establishing India as a leader in the global electric vehicle transition.
