Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has called for a cultural shift towards sports in India, urging that every household embrace athletic pursuits. Speaking at the Sportstar x KPMG PLAYCOM Business of Sports Summit 2025 in New Delhi, he emphasized the importance of making sports a movement that resonates with all citizens. Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the multifaceted nature of sports in India, describing it as integral to the nation’s culture, economy, and lifestyle.
Promoting Sports as a People’s Movement
During his address, Dr. Mandaviya stressed the need for sports to become a grassroots movement that engages every citizen. He cited initiatives like “Sundays on Cycles” as examples of how to foster community involvement in sports. The Minister believes that by embedding a sporting culture in every home, India can cultivate a generation passionate about athletics. He stated, โEvery street in Bharat should become a sporting arena, and every podium should witness Bharatโs flag flying high.โ This vision aims to inspire children and families to participate in sports, making it a shared experience across the nation.
Reforms and Strategic Vision for Sports
Dr. Mandaviya outlined a comprehensive vision to elevate India to one of the top five sporting nations globally. He highlighted the series of reforms initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership, which have focused on athlete-centric policies and infrastructure development. The Minister pointed to successful campaigns like “Fit India” and “Khelo India,” which have generated enthusiasm and awareness about sports among citizens. He emphasized the need for continuous reforms, stating, โWhat it needs is opportunity, nurturing, and respect.โ This long-term commitment aims to create a robust sporting ecosystem that nurtures talent and fosters excellence.
Institutional Framework and Gender Representation
In his speech, Dr. Mandaviya introduced the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, which he described as a landmark legislation aimed at ensuring athlete-centric governance. This Act will establish mechanisms for dispute resolution and mandate women’s representation in decision-making bodies. He asserted that women must not only participate in sports but also have a platform to voice their opinions. The Minister’s commitment to gender equality in sports governance aims to create a more inclusive environment for female athletes.
Future-Ready Policies and Unified Action
Dr. Mandaviya also discussed the Khelo Bharat Niti – 2025, developed through extensive consultations and benchmarking against international best practices. He emphasized the need for policies that are inclusive, performance-oriented, and focused on national interests. The Minister called for the establishment of academies and professional leagues to support promising athletes from a young age. He concluded his address by urging collective action from the government, industry, and citizens to realize India’s potential as a sporting superpower. The event also featured the inauguration of the Sports Tech and Manufacturing Expo, attended by notable figures in the sports community.
