IPL Chairman Addresses Fans Amidst Operation Sindoor During India vs Pakistan Match

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal recently addressed the ongoing discussions regarding India’s stance on competing against Pakistan in multi-nation tournaments. Speaking at the Playcom Business of Sports Summit 2025, Dhumal emphasized that India will only face Pakistan in events organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) or the International Cricket Council (ICC), in accordance with government policy. This announcement comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the upcoming Asia Cup match scheduled for September 14 in Dubai, as new guidelines from the Indian government restrict bilateral competitions with Pakistan.

India’s Position on Pakistan Matches

During his remarks, Dhumal reiterated the Indian government’s position on sporting engagements with Pakistan. He stated that while Indian teams can participate in international events that include Pakistani participants, they will not engage in bilateral competitions or events hosted in Pakistan. “I would like to wish Team India all the best. I think the government has clarified its position,” Dhumal noted. He confirmed that India would adhere to the government’s directives, which have been shaped by recent geopolitical tensions, including a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that resulted in the loss of 26 lives.

The situation escalated further when India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure across the Line of Control. Dhumal’s comments reflect a cautious approach to cricketing relations with Pakistan, emphasizing the need to follow government policy in these sensitive matters.

Evacuation Efforts Amid Tensions

Dhumal also recounted his involvement in the evacuation of spectators during a recent IPL match in Dharamsala, which was halted due to rising political tensions between India and Pakistan. The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned after concerns arose from attempted drone attacks near Chandigarh. Dhumal took immediate action, urging the crowd to exit the stadium calmly to avoid panic. “We had to ensure that the evacuation of spectators happened without pressing the panic button,” he explained. His leadership during this crisis was crucial in ensuring the safety of players and fans alike.

The IPL was temporarily paused as a result of these tensions, highlighting the impact of political issues on sporting events. Dhumal praised the local police and district administration for their support during the evacuation, which was executed smoothly despite the challenging circumstances.

Sponsorship Developments for Team India

In addition to discussing the India-Pakistan situation, Dhumal addressed the current sponsorship status of Team India. Following the withdrawal of Dream11, the team is now without a lead sponsor as they participate in the Asia Cup. Dhumal assured that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively seeking a new sponsor, stating, “We have started the ball rolling as far as finding a new sponsor is concerned, and in 2-3 weeks, you will get to know that.”

The BCCI has set a deadline of September 12 for the submission of interest in sponsorship, with bids due by September 16. The departure of Dream11 was linked to the Indian government’s new regulations on online gaming, which included an exit clause in their contract. The BCCI’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled for September 28, where key elections, including the presidency, will take place. Dhumal indicated that nominations would begin shortly, providing clarity on the future leadership of the BCCI.
