Chinese Mini PC Packs Ryzen 9800X3D and RTX 4080 in Compact 2.5-Liter Design

Chinese technology company FEVM has unveiled its latest innovation, the FA65G mini PC, which boasts a compact design reminiscent of Appleโ€™s Mac Studio. This 2.5-liter system is powered by the Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor and features a unique chassis that accommodates desktop-class hardware. While the device promises impressive performance, it faces challenges with thermal management, reaching temperatures of 95 degrees Celsius under maximum load. Additionally, the system operates at a noise level of up to 47 decibels when both the CPU and GPU are under stress.

Compact Design and Specifications

The FEVM FA65G mini PC is designed with a chassis measuring 167.5 x 167.5 x 96 mm and weighs 1.85 kilograms. This compact form factor allows for the integration of powerful components, including a custom B650-based mini-ITX motherboard with an AM5 socket. The design not only mirrors the aesthetics of the Mac Studio but also enables the installation of a Ryzen 9000X3D processor alongside discrete graphics in MXM form. This combination aims to deliver workstation-level performance while maintaining a small footprint, making it suitable for various professional applications.

Performance and Thermal Management

The FA65G is equipped with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which operates between 65 and 100 watts, depending on the configuration. During rigorous testing, the CPU reached temperatures of 95 degrees Celsius, which, while within acceptable limits, is close to the thermal threshold. FEVM has indicated that users can opt for higher-end processors like the Ryzen 9 9900X3D or 9950X3D, although these upgrades may encounter similar thermal challenges. The graphics capabilities of the FA65G are enhanced by the inclusion of rare MXM cards, such as the RTX 4080 LP and RTX 5000 Ada, which are designed to deliver high performance in a compact setup.

Cooling Solutions and Upgrade Potential

To address the thermal demands of its powerful components, the FA65G features a custom cooling system equipped with four heat pipes and dual fans. The system is powered by a 330-watt external adapter, ensuring that the GPUs operate efficiently. Testing has shown that the RTX 4080 LP performs comparably to desktop graphics cards like the RTX 3080 and RTX 4070, while also surpassing the RTX 5060 Ti. The FA65G supports two M.2 2280 slots with PCIe 4.0 x4 capability and can accommodate up to 128 gigabytes of DDR5-6400 RAM through two SO-DIMM slots. Accessing these components is straightforward, as users can simply remove the bottom lid of the chassis.

Connectivity and Future Prospects

The FA65G offers a robust selection of ports, similar to those found on the Mac Studio. This includes USB4, USB-A 3.2 Gen ports, dual HDMI 2.1, dual DisplayPort, and two 2.5GbE NICs, along with additional USB-C and USB 2.0 connections. Stress tests indicate that the Ryzen 9800X3D CPU can reach temperatures of 86 degrees Celsius at 90 watts, peaking at 95 degrees when pushed to 100 watts. The system noise levels vary between 41 and 47.3 decibels, depending on the load, while the GPU remains cooler, with a maximum temperature of 74.3 degrees. Although there is currently no confirmed pricing or release date, the configuration featuring the Ryzen 9800X3D and RTX 4080 LP is expected to exceed $2,000, reflecting the high demand for MXM GPUs.
